Iran calls Washington's reply on Hormuz "insufficient" on the day a tanker is struck in the strait

What happened
- Dammam's King Fahd International Airport, in the Eastern Province, was the target of an attack, Saudi Arabia's civil aviation authority confirmed on Sunday evening.
- Riyadh's King Khalid International was targeted again Sunday and stayed closed, a day after a missile strike killed 12 people and wounded more than 300, according to initial reports.
- UKMTO said the tanker was hit on its port side by an unidentified projectile, that the ship was damaged, that all crew were safe, and that it was investigating.
- Rezaei threatened US assets in the Gulf if fighting resumes, saying "many cables, data centers and artificial intelligence centers will come within range."
- Fox News's Trey Yingst reported that Trump signaled the US could join retaliatory strikes on the Houthis after the Riyadh attack, which reportedly killed an American.
Why it matters
- exposure Ships transiting Hormuz have an open UKMTO investigation and an instruction to "exercise caution and immediately report any suspicious activity," and must price the risk without knowing who fired.
- decision Washington has two decisions open at once, whether to join strikes on the Houthis and whether to answer Tehran again on the seven conditions, and we'd expect the first to crowd the second.
- contradiction Fox's headline says Trump and Iran both called the US midterms no factor in the talks, but the passage reproduces neither statement, so the political-timetable reading is unverified here.
Tehran's wording leaves a door open. The secretary said, "Naturally, they must resolve the ambiguities. We must see whether they can resolve the ambiguities so that the next stages can begin or not." [2] He was asking for clarification on a seven-point list, in remarks IRNA relayed from a Press TV interview [1]. The size of the gap is unknown: the Fox News passage does not list the seven points, describe the US reply or quote an oil or freight price.
Two days separate Trump's Friday forecast from the damaged tanker [10]. Trump had said the war was "going to be over soon" [9]. One hull with every crew member safe is a small event. The projectile is still unidentified in UKMTO's account [3], so on this account the strike is not tied to Iran.
Dammam sits on a different front from the strait. Fox's headline says the Houthis claimed responsibility for the attack there [11], and the passage connects the Houthi attacks to the Hormuz dispute by date alone.
We think shipping risk in the strait is still live, because one Sunday produced a rejection from Tehran [1], a struck tanker [3] and a second Saudi airport under attack [5], and none of the three is a step toward reopening. The counter-thesis is reasonable. "Insufficient" may be bargaining, since the secretary left the next stages open [2]. The tanker strike is unattributed. The Dammam attack belongs to a Saudi-Houthi war that Hormuz traffic never touches.
Two outcomes would prove us wrong: a clarified US reply that Tehran accepts, so that the next stages begin, or a run of transits with no further UKMTO notice. A single strike is thin evidence of a pattern, and a second notice would strengthen it.
What to watch
- A second UKMTO notice for the strait, or any party named for the Sunday strike on the tanker.
- A revised US reply to the seven conditions, and whether Tehran then says the next stages can begin.
- Whether the US joins strikes on the Houthis, and whether Rezaei's Gulf infrastructure targets move from "not yet" to named.
