Apple prices HomeView $120 above Echo Show 8 for twice the RAM
HomeView, Apple's $300 hub, has twice the RAM of Amazon's $180 Echo Show 8 and a smaller 7-inch screen. The extra $120 buys silicon and memory, while Pocket-lint's spec list gives the Echo the larger display and a Zigbee radio.
The Product Desk

The Echo Show 8 has an 8.7-inch landscape display at 1,340 x 800 pixels. The HomeView has a 7-inch square display at 1,088 x 1,088 pixels. The HomeView's panel has about 10% more pixels than the Echo Show 8's.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Echo Show 8 display | 8.7 inches | landscape, 1,340 x 800 pixels | 5 |
| HomeView display | 7 inches | square, 1,088 x 1,088 pixels | 3 |
| HomeView pixels, about | 10% more vs Echo | 22 |
What happened
- The A18 in the HomeView is the same chip that powers the iPhone 16, 16 Plus and 16e.
- A wall-mounted HomeView costs the same $300 but comes only in silver and space gray.
- The Echo Show 8 supports Alexa+ natively, where the HomeView has Siri AI features built in.
Why it matters
- cost Each room that gets a HomeView instead of an Echo adds the $120 gap again, so the premium grows with the number of hubs.
- contradiction The spec sheets disagree about which screen is bigger: the diagonal favors the Echo and the pixel count favors the HomeView.
- decision The choice for a given room turns on which assistant its users already talk to and whether Zigbee devices need to connect, more than on chip or RAM.
- constraint The comparison pits a new device on pre-order against a year-old rival with no refresh date, so its verdict has a shelf life.
Set the two on a kitchen counter and the first difference is shape. The HomeView's 7-inch panel is square, 1,088 x 1,088 pixels [3]. The Echo Show 8's 8.7-inch panel is landscape, 1,340 x 800 [5]. The Echo wins on diagonal and the HomeView wins on pixel count, 1,183,744 against 1,072,000, about 10% more [22].
The premium is 67% over the Echo's $180 [21]. For that money the buyer gets the A18, the chip in the iPhone 16, 16 Plus and 16e [7], and 8GB of RAM [2]. The Echo runs an AZ3 Pro with 4GB [4]. Pocket-lint says the Echo's lower specs are to be expected at its lower price [18].
Both hubs are sold on an assistant. The HomeView has Siri AI features built in [12], and the Echo Show 8 supports Alexa+ natively [13]. Pocket-lint says the AZ3 Pro features on-device AI as well [14]. The spec table invites the conclusion that 8GB and an A18 decide the purchase. We think the assistant decides it, since it is what a person meets in the first minute, and the listed specifications do not show how Siri AI behaves on the extra memory. The HomeView is on pre-order until its November 13 launch [8].
The Echo is the older device. The fourth-generation Echo Show 8 reached the public on November 12 last year [9]. Pocket-lint calls it a generation behind and says it is unclear when Amazon will refresh it [10]. Part of the spec gap is therefore age, and a refresh would narrow it on a date that is still unclear.
On the remaining lines the two are close. Both list Thread and Matter [15], and the front cameras are 12 megapixels on the HomeView and 13 on the Echo [17]. Zigbee is the one radio on Pocket-lint's lists that only the Echo carries [16].
We'd sort each room on two questions: which assistant the people in it already use, and whether the hub has to reach Zigbee devices. Where the phones are Apple's and no Zigbee gear is installed, buy the HomeView. The tradeoff is $120 more per room [19] for a smaller diagonal and a device that is not yet shipping. Where the accounts are Amazon's, or Zigbee sensors are already in the house, buy the Echo Show 8. The tradeoff is an older generation with no refresh date. A room that fits neither case gets one of each, and the one people talk to is the one to repeat.
What to watch
- Any date from Amazon for a successor to the fourth-generation Echo Show 8, which would reset the spec comparison.
- Hands-on reviews after the November 13 launch that show how Siri AI runs on the HomeView's 8GB.
- Whether Apple's own spec page ever lists Zigbee for the HomeView.
