What happened

  • The new box supports four compatible HomePods used in pairs for surround sound, up from the two that current Apple TV models allow.
  • The new model matches the discontinued top model's 128GB of storage, Ethernet port, Thread and Matter support, and adds Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.
  • Siri AI will be available in English in eight countries: the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and India.

Why it matters

  • constraint Personal context, the step Apple takes beyond Google's and Amazon's TV assistants, draws on an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, so it reaches only households that already own one.
  • cost Four HomePod Mini 2s at $149 each come to $596, so a four-speaker setup with the $299 box costs $895.
  • decision Owners of current Apple TV models who want four-speaker surround have to buy the new box, because the feature is exclusive to it.
  • contradiction 9to5mac's feature list names only the HomePod mini 2 for four-speaker surround, while The Verge also lists the second-gen HomePod. The difference decides whether an owner can reuse speakers already in the house.

In the demo The Verge saw, someone asked whether the soccer team in the Ted Lasso episode on screen was real. Siri put a few sentences in the top-right corner: no, it is fictional [8].

Siri does not speak its answers on Apple TV, unlike on the HomePod or HomeView. They appear full screen after a content search, or in a text bubble for general-knowledge questions [7].

The Verge calls the box the first Apple TV model to support Siri AI [22]. Its contrast with the HomePod and HomeView implies the assistant already runs on those two [7]. Apple announced the Apple TV as one product in a smart home push that also includes a $299 HomeView display, a $149 HomePod Mini 2 and devices built with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric [13]. Neither source calls the Apple TV the hub of that push. In our view it is the part of the push built for the television.

The price comparison depends on the baseline. Against the top model Apple is discontinuing, the increase is $50, from $249 [18]. Against the prior generation's debut, The Verge says $299 is more than double [1], so that earlier price was below $149.50 [19].

9to5mac lists the A19 chip at up to 50% faster CPU and 2x faster GPU performance than the prior model [16]. It had been four years since the last Apple TV 4K [17].

Google's TV Streamer with Gemini and Amazon's Fire TV with Alexa Plus already have AI-powered search [9]. Apple's addition is personal context, which uses information from an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone. According to The Verge, a viewer can say "Play that show my friend texted me" and the box pulls from their text messages [10]. Apple says Siri AI lets viewers use natural language [6]. There is no usage data yet on how they will; the box is available November 13 [4].

The purchase sorts on two facts a household already knows: whether someone in it has an Apple Intelligence-capable iPhone, and whether it plans to run four HomePods. With both, the box delivers personal context [10] and four-speaker surround [11]. With the phone and no extra speakers, the case rests on personal context in a beta [5] that answers in text [7]. With neither, what remains is a faster chip [16] and the Siri AI beta without personal context, and in our view that is a thin case at $299 [1]. With speakers and no such phone, the surround mode stands on its own, because it is exclusive to the new box [14].

What to watch

  • Whether Apple's final spec sheet lists the second-gen HomePod for four-speaker surround, since 9to5mac's list names only the HomePod mini 2 and its post was still updating.
  • How Siri AI performs in beta once the box is available on November 13, and whether Apple extends it past English and the eight launch countries.
  • Whether Apple adds spoken Siri answers to the Apple TV, which now shows them only as text.
