Apple tests whether Siri AI sells hardware with a $299 hub

Apple will ship its $299 HomeView hub on Nov. 13, with Siri AI as the selling point. The Wearables, Home and Accessories line it joins reported $7.88 billion in the June quarter, about 7% of revenue, so the hub is a small bet beside the iPhone.

Key figures: Apple's Wearables, Home and Accessories line reported $7.88 billion in sales in the quarter ended June, about 7% of revenue, implying total revenue near $113 billion. At $299 a unit, $1 billion of HomeView revenue would need about 3.3 million units.

What happened

  • Apple's HomePod Mini now costs $149, up from the previous $129, and the new model comes in fresh colors.
  • The Apple TV 4K goes from $199 to $299, following a similar increase earlier this year that CNBC links to Tim Cook calling memory costs unsustainable.
  • Apple Home Collection accessories co-developed with LG Electronics and Schneider Electric are priced between $199 and $399 and start shipping in December.

Why it matters

  • exposure Apple said HomeView is not sold in the EU because Siri AI is unavailable there, so the hub's sales ceiling depends on a regulatory approval Apple does not control.
  • decision Apple is spending on the hub and Siri while LG and Schneider make the accessories and no App Store is built, so the outlay stays narrow if the hub disappoints.
  • constraint HomeView is reported inside a line shared with AirPods and Apple Watch, so a clean read on the hub needs a separate breakout or management comment.

At $299, every $1 billion of HomeView revenue takes about 3.3 million units [27]. A billion dollars is 12.7% of the $7.88 billion the Wearables, Home and Accessories line reported for the June quarter [28], and because that line was about 7% of revenue [13], total sales that quarter were near $113 billion [25] and the billion is under 1% of them [29]. One foldable Duo at nearly $2,000 [23] brings in about as much as six or seven hubs [26].

We think the hub is still the cleanest test Apple has run of whether Siri AI sells hardware. According to Bloomberg, as relayed by Quartz, the device had been in development for years and was held back until Siri AI was ready to anchor it [6]. CNBC says Apple positioned the accessories as a showcase for the Siri abilities released last month [4], and that home products are a higher priority under John Ternus, who took over from Tim Cook in September [5]. Sales of a product held back for a feature say something about that feature.

The price changes cloud the reading. The HomePod Mini's $20 increase is 15.5% [31] and the Apple TV 4K's $100 increase is 50.3% [24], though the TV gained onboard microphones [17] and the Mini a new S10 chip [18]. CNBC ties the Apple TV increase to an earlier one this year, made after Cook said memory costs for Apple were unsustainable [2], and describes an industry dealing with price increases and weaker demand over memory and storage shortages [15]. Nothing in the sources splits either increase between memory cost and new features. A soft quarter for the Mini or the TV would have a cheaper explanation than Siri.

The buyer is the second complication. HomeView relies on a connected iPhone or iPad for personal context [10], and CNBC notes that smart home integration helps keep people with several Apple products from switching to Android [16]. The likely purchaser is an existing Apple household. Strong sales would show Siri selling inside the ecosystem and would say little about winning anyone from Amazon and Google, who dominate the market the hub enters, according to Quartz [12].

Apple's Greg Joswiak said HomeView "makes it easy to control your smart home" [21]. Bob O'Donnell, chief analyst at TECHnalysis Research, said that even after Apple upgraded Siri this summer with Google's help [19], wiring a smart home is still too difficult for many Apple consumers to see a benefit [20]. Apple's answer is setup in one tap from an iPhone [22].

Investors, according to CNBC, remain focused on iPhone sales [3]. Channel NewsAsia reports they are looking harder at hardware for growth because services revenue has come under regulatory pressure [11]. The two fit together, since the iPhone is hardware. The thesis fails if the category line rises with no sign the hub drove it, or stays flat with no way to tell whether the hub sold.

What to watch

  • Apple's revenue for the Wearables, Home and Accessories line in the first report covering Nov. 13 shipments, against the $7.88 billion June-quarter base, and whether management breaks out the hub.
  • Any date for HomeView in the EU, which depends on Siri AI becoming available there.
  • Further price moves on the HomePod Mini and Apple TV 4K, given the memory-cost pressure CNBC describes.
