GLP-1 drugs outsold generative AI in 2025 on Exponential View's own estimate of AI revenue
Exponential View says GLP-1 sales reached $76 billion in 2025, ahead of its own $63 billion estimate for generative AI. The $13 billion lead rests on that estimate, and the retention studies the piece cites show heavy attrition.

GLP-1 sales reached $76 billion in 2025. Exponential View's own estimate for generative AI revenue is $63 billion. Up to 11% of US adults now take a GLP-1 for weight loss. In a UK study, 15% stayed on the drug after two years.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| GLP-1 sales, 2025, per Exponential View | 76 $ billion | 17 | |
| Generative AI revenue | 63 $bn, EV estimate | 19 | |
| US adults on GLP-1s, up to | 11 % (weight loss) | 2 | |
| On drug after two years | 15 % (UK study) | 11 |
What happened
- In 2024, 3% of US adults took a GLP-1 for weight loss, and the newsletter says that share is now 11%.
- Novo's self-pay price for semaglutide came in at $499 a month and fell to as low as $199 from February.
- A month's supply in India cost about $13 after the patent there expired on March 20, 99% below the original US list price.
- Eli Lilly took a 13% realized price cut in Q2 and saw volume rise 60%, according to the newsletter.
- A Danish study of people using GLP-1s for obesity found that half quit within a year.
Why it matters
- contradiction Adoption is rising while attrition is high. In the UK study only 15% were still on the drug after two years, which points to an 11% that turns over.
- constraint Price cuts lift volume at first, and the India readings show growth can fall to near zero within months. A plan that extrapolates the first reading overstates demand.
- decision Anyone repeating the crossover this quarter is repeating a comparison against the newsletter's own AI estimate, and the attribution has to travel with the number.
The lead over generative AI is narrow. The gap between the two figures is $13 billion [20], about 21% of the AI estimate [21]. An AI figure that much higher would reverse the order. The piece does not set out how the $63 billion was built. The newsletter words its own timing with care, writing: "Revenue growth suggests this may be the crossover year." [18]
The adoption evidence does not depend on that estimate. Exponential View said in August 2024 that GLP-1s "will be the most impactful technology in the US over the next two years, with more meaningful and measurable impacts than either artificial intelligence or renewable technologies." [1] US adult use has since grown about 3.7 times [14]. Citing a16z, the newsletter adds that more than twice as many Americans pay for GLP-1s as pay for AI [3].
Price against volume is the tradeoff here. Set against the $1,349 list price that has not moved since June 2021 [4], the $199 self-pay price [5] is about 85% lower [15]. Taken together, Lilly's price and volume moves imply roughly 39% more revenue, if both are measured against the same base [16]. India is the counter-case. Sales growth there was 58% in April and 2% in June, after generics arrived [8]. Two monthly readings from one country do not settle whether lower prices build a stable base or draw a one-time rush of buyers.
Persistence is the weaker side of the case. The FDA approved Wegovy in 2021 "for chronic weight management", with no specified duration [9], so indefinite use is the intended pattern and the studies show patients leaving sooner. In our view, 2025 is a fair reading of one year and a thin basis for a decade. The 11% counts people on the drug today. Whether it keeps rising depends on how many stay.
Oral products are the obvious response. The newsletter says a daily pill might be more sustainable than a weekly injection [12]. Pills trade results for comfort: the newsletter reports they have been less effective than the injections, despite greater comfort for the user and easier manufacturing [13].
What to watch
- Lilly's next reported realized price and volume, to see whether a price-for-volume swap still lifts revenue after Q2's 13% cut and 60% volume rise.
- India's monthly GLP-1 sales after June's 2% growth, to see whether the post-generic slowdown holds.
- A published build-up of the $63 billion generative AI estimate, so the 21% margin can be tested.
