Disney makes Character.AI's former head its first companywide CTO
Disney CEO Josh D'Amaro hired Karandeep Anand, who previously ran Character.AI, as the company's first companywide CTO. His first memo to staff sets focus and a willingness to say no as the terms of the job, so the first test is which technology projects lose.

What happened
- Anand started in early October and sent staff his first memo on a Friday afternoon, as he closed out his first week.
- The memo repeated the three priorities D'Amaro listed when he announced the hire: storytelling as the North Star, technology in service of creativity, and operating as One Disney.
- Disney sent Character.AI a cease-and-desist letter last fall over chatbots built from its copyrighted characters, and the startup complied.
- Under D'Amaro, Disney is investing in technology to compete better with Netflix and YouTube in streaming.
Why it matters
- constraint With D'Amaro's three priorities adopted whole, a technology project's case now rests on tying it to storytelling, creativity or One Disney.
- decision Anand told staff he will meet teams in the coming weeks and share his priorities soon. The first decision is which current efforts slow down.
- contradiction Anand told staff Disney is "uniquely positioned to win", yet its shares trail the S&P 500 by at least 18.3 points over the past year.
Whether this is centralization depends on reporting lines, and the account so far is thin on them. Disney had no companywide CTO before Anand, and D'Amaro hired him to lead the company's tech transformation, according to Business Insider [1]. In our view a single executive with that remit is a more concentrated arrangement than what existed before. Business Insider's account does not say which existing technology leaders now report to him or what budget he controls.
The memo names the trade-off itself. Anand wrote: "It will take focus, speed, and the willingness to say no to good ideas so we can say yes to great ones." [8] The company has plenty in motion to say no to. This year it embraced AI and further unified Disney+ and Hulu, which Business Insider describes as the first step in building a streaming super app that includes games and merchandise [7]. We think the real trade-off is breadth against speed in streaming. A super app with games and merchandise adds surface area, and speed is the other thing the memo asks for.
The memo is short on specifics. It was written at the end of his first week, it adopts D'Amaro's priorities as they stand, and it commits to no specific project. Anand's own line explains why it is early: "I'll be direct with you about priorities and tradeoffs as I learn them." [9]
Next quarter, the list Anand produces will tell every team where it ranks. We'd expect the first no that matters to fall on a project already announced.
What to watch
- Anand's promised priority list, and which Disney technology projects it slows or drops.
- Any disclosure of who reports to the CTO and what budget his organization controls.
- Further steps in the Disney+ and Hulu unification toward the streaming super app.
