With 2% of a $37 trillion advice market, Schwab lifted wealth advisory flows 55%
Schwab executives said wealth advisory net flows grew 55% in the third quarter, in a division with about 2% of a $37 trillion advice market. Consultant Tim Welch says the firm is shrinking its RIA referral program while it builds a competing offer.

Schwab's minimum account for a client referral rises to $5 million at the start of 2027, from $2 million. Firms entering its Advisor Network need at least $500 million in assets, up from $250 million. Consultant Tim Welch says the referral bar rose tenfold in roughly 18 months.

What happened
- Schwab said 37% of its current clients reported a willingness to pay for advice.
- Last year Schwab announced 16 new branches, 25 expanded or relocated ones and up to 400 branch-related hires.
- CEO Rick Wurster said Schwab is building a proprietary long-short strategy and will update soon, without giving a date.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure RIAs lose referral access to clients holding $2 million to $5 million from 2027, and smaller firms below $500 million in assets cannot enter the Advisor Network.
- Who has to decide decision Schwab is putting money into its own branches, planning tools and trust and estate offerings while it raises its referral minimums, so direct advice is the channel it is choosing to fund.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Wurster reiterated the commitment to RIAs and cited strong RIA arrivals, while consultant Tim Welch says the referral program is being deliberately shrunk.
The 55% in wealth advisory net flows [1] needs a denominator. Managed investing net flows reached a record $24 billion in the quarter, up 22% [4], so last year's figure was near $19.7 billion and the gain near $4.3 billion [18]. Wurster said wealth advisory sits within that total [5], and a piece growing 55% inside a whole growing 22% means the rest of managed investing grew by less than 22% [20]. Schwab did not disclose the dollar base behind the 55% or how it measures the 2% share. If the share is measured in assets, 2% of $37 trillion is about $740 billion [23].
Schwab's pitch is that 2% leaves room [2]. "Client demand for advice is accelerating," Wurster said [6]. The spending follows. Last year Schwab announced 16 new branches, 25 existing branches expanded or relocated and up to 400 branch-related hires [14], and this quarter's slides list wealth hubs, discretionary portfolios, tax, trust and estate offerings and "AI-powered planning" [15].
Schwab is raising its referral minimums. In August Schwab told RIAs that from the start of 2027 a client needs $5 million to be referred, up from $2 million [7], a 2.5-times increase [19]. Firms entering its Advisor Network need at least $500 million under management, up from $250 million [8]. Accounts between $2 million and $5 million qualify today and will not in 2027 [7].
wealthmanagement.com wrote that Schwab cut its outsourcing of referrals to RIAs "presumably to offer advice directly to those clients" [22]. Consultant Tim Welch of Nexus Strategy put it harder in an August white paper: "In roughly 18 months, the bar for a client to even qualify for a Schwab referral has risen tenfold. This is not a program being fine-tuned. It is a program being deliberately shrunk, in a hurry, while Schwab builds a competing offer of its own." [10] Measured to the $5 million, a tenfold rise starts from about $500,000 [24].
Schwab's own account points the other way. Wurster reiterated the firm's commitment to RIAs on the call, and Schwab reported that it beat its custodial peers by a wide margin in the volume of RIAs joining its channel [21]. The referral program is small: Schwab estimated it at 100 to 150 RIAs and, per earlier executive comments, had not updated it since 2002 [9]. Schwab was also the first RIA custodian included in Anthropic's Claude for Financial Advisors [16].
Schwab and Fidelity have recently limited the use of long-short strategies to manage demand [12]. Wurster said Schwab is working on a proprietary version, with an update soon and no timing given [11]. "We will be able to run that product in a very efficient way from a balance sheet and operational standpoint that will help us sustain an ability to deliver long-short capabilities to our clients," he said [13]. wealthmanagement.com wrote that some RIAs would welcome the offering [17].
We think the referral change tells more than the 55% does. Schwab is tightening a channel of 100 to 150 firms while it spends on its own branches and planning tools, and the client with $2 million to $5 million is the one left to be served directly. The counter-thesis is that the program is too small to matter and RIAs keep arriving, as Schwab's own count suggests. We would be wrong if wealth advisory flows slow toward the 22% pace of the managed total while the branches are still opening.
What to watch
- Whether RIAs keep joining Schwab's custody channel after the $5 million referral minimum takes effect at the start of 2027.
- Schwab's promised update on its proprietary long-short strategy, for which Wurster gave no date.
- Any disclosure of the dollar base behind the 55% wealth advisory flow growth, or of how the 2% share is measured.
