Schwab's net new assets jump 38% to 43% before AI agents have had time to move clients' cash

Schwab's third-quarter net new assets rose 38% to 43% from a year earlier, with qz.com and The Daily Upside reporting different totals. Neither total isolates the sweep cash that AI agents are expected to move, so the quarter dents the near-term case and leaves the forward one untested.

Schwab's core net new assets hit a record in Q3 Schwab's third-quarter net new assets, total and core, and the new brokerage accounts clients opened in the quarter.

Key figures: Schwab reported $192.4 billion in third-quarter net new assets, per The Daily Upside. Core net new assets were a record $190.4 billion, per qz.com. Clients opened 1.2 million new brokerage accounts in the quarter, per CEO Rick Wurster.

What happened

  • Schwab posted record net revenue of $7.2 billion, up 17%, and adjusted earnings of $1.69 a share against $1.31 a year earlier, according to qz.com.
  • Meta's Muse agent prompted a brief sell-off in brokerage stocks that also hit LPL Financial and Raymond James.
  • JPMorgan said earlier this week that it is blocking agents such as Muse and Instinct from direct account access, and it is piloting its own tool, Smart Cash.
  • Schwab's shares fell 2.7% on Thursday; Morningstar pointed to a modest revenue miss and a 3.04% net interest margin that came in short of expectations.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint A year-end margin shortfall will be hard to pin on agents: Schwab added $5.5 billion of costlier borrowing over unrealized-loss concerns, and executives already expect the margin at the low end of expectations.
  • What doesn't add up contradiction The Daily Upside reports a modest revenue miss, while qz.com, citing Barron's, says revenue topped forecasts of $7.18 billion, so the cause of Thursday's sell-off is itself contested.
  • What it sets up precedent With JPMorgan and Schwab both blocking agents within days of each other, flows at blocked brokers will say less about agent demand than flows at firms that let agents in.

Two outlets give two figures for the quarter's inflow, and Schwab's own statement uses the lower one. "During the third quarter, clients opened 1.2 million new brokerage accounts and entrusted Schwab with $190.4 billion in core net new assets," Rick Wurster, Schwab's president and chief executive, said in a statement [4]. qz.com reports that as a 38% rise [2]. The Daily Upside has $192.4 billion and 43% [1]. The totals differ by $2.0 billion [17], and the year-ago bases they imply differ by more: $192.4 billion divided by 1.43 is about $134.5 billion [18], while $190.4 billion divided by 1.38 is about $138.0 billion [19]. Neither report explains the gap, so any reading of the quarter has to hold across the whole range.

Shares in Schwab and other major US brokers have carried an AI-disruption discount this year [16]. The channel in that thesis is specific: agents move idle money out of brokers, and Schwab's net interest revenue leans on a large pool of low-yielding sweep cash that it invests in assets like Treasuries [14]. Net new assets is a blunt instrument for testing it. The measure counts cash, stocks, bonds and mutual funds together [3], so a quarter can post a record total while the cash portion shrinks, provided stock and fund inflows are large enough. The reports do not include a sweep cash balance.

Timing is the second limit. Meta launched Muse last month [11], so at most the final month of a three-month quarter overlaps it [20]. Schwab moved to block agents only on Thursday [13]. Morningstar analysts took the quarter at face value. "Schwab's core business is extremely healthy, exhibiting no signs of intensifying competitive pressure that would support the artificial intelligence disruption narrative," they wrote Thursday [15].

July's record second quarter drew the same response from the stock: it finished that session 2.5% lower, although Schwab had raised its 2026 revenue growth guidance to a range of 17.5% to 18.5% [10].

In our view, the quarter undercuts the claim that agents are already pulling cash out of Schwab and leaves the forward claim untested. That is a narrower finding than a 43% inflow invites. Two outcomes would change the read. If a rival broker lets agents in, cash could leave Schwab for it with no agent ever touching a Schwab account. If Schwab's sweep balance falls underneath a rising total, the headline figure would have hidden the move, and the year-end margin is where it would first show. A margin below what executives guided, with funding costs unable to explain the shortfall, would show we were wrong.

What to watch

  • Any sweep cash balance Schwab reports alongside net new assets, since neither source gives one and the total mixes cash with stocks, bonds and funds.
  • Schwab's year-end net interest margin against the low end of expectations that executives flagged, and how much of any miss the added borrowing explains.
  • Whether brokers other than JPMorgan and Schwab, LPL Financial and Raymond James among them, block agents or let them in.
