An endangered Australian fish turned up in six tropical watersheds far north of its recorded range. The species did not move north; the record of it was wrong, and a fire survey found out by accident.

A range map records where people have looked, and this animal is built to defeat looking. Mordacia praecox spends three to four years as a sightless larva under the creek bed filtering algae, then metamorphoses into an adult that stops feeding, breeds and dies within months [6]. Only in that short adult window can it be reliably told apart from the parasitic short-headed lamprey, Mordacia mordax, which is considered at low risk of extinction [8]. Taking the adult phase at a few months, the identifiable share of an individual's life is under about a tenth of it [1]. For the rest, a competent survey of an occupied creek can come back empty, or come back with the wrong name on the sheet.
The study's own title carries the qualifier that matters. It expands the known range, in Endangered Species Research [11]. Nothing about the fish changed. Six tropical and subtropical watersheds now hold documented populations of an animal that was not expected in tropical water at all [4], and the 1,400 km gap [2] is a measure of how much confidence had been placed in a boundary never tested against a method the species could not evade.
The correction does not read as good news. Carpenter-Bundhoo says the species was thought extinct in its original range, that Queensland may now be the only place it exists, and that this may be its last bastion [10]. Six new sites do not offset a lost south. They relocate the whole species' prospects onto creeks nobody was managing with it in mind, where fire, development and sediment entering the water can damage habitat and, in low-lying streams, sea-level rise can push saltwater in [9].
The $90,116 Queensland grant [5] buys two things that are easily conflated. One is more dots on the map: surveys of where each animal actually occurs. The other is taxonomy, comparisons at Griffith University to decide whether two smaller Queensland lampreys warrant formal description, without which neither can be recognised or named [12]. If both hold up, Australia's count goes from three lamprey species to five, three of them in Queensland [13], which puts 60 per cent of the national list in one state [2] for a group assumed until recently to stop well to the south.
Worth noting how the error surfaced. Carpenter-Bundhoo was on K'gari surveying Black Summer bushfire damage [3], not hunting lampreys, when he electrofished a seven-gilled, toothed, eel-like fish out of a creek [1]. No lamprey monitoring caught a 1,400 km mistake. A fire survey did.

Carpenter-Bundhoo said in a press release: 'This species was thought to be extinct in its original range, and now Queensland may be the only place it exists. This might be the last bastion of this endangered species.'
Luke Carpenter-Bundhoo was electrofishing a creek on K'gari in 2022 when he encountered an eel-like animal with seven visible gill openings and a circular mouth ringed with sharp teeth, features that pointed to a lamprey.
No lamprey had been documented on K'gari; the island is about 870 miles (1,400 kilometres) north of the Australian brook lamprey's previously known range, and its tropical waters fell outside the conditions in which lampreys were expected to be.
Carpenter-Bundhoo had been surveying how Australia's Black Summer bushfires affected the island's ecosystems, and the lamprey became the subject of a separate investigation.
Carpenter-Bundhoo and Queensland government scientist David Moffatt later documented populations of the Australian brook lamprey (Mordacia praecox) in six tropical and subtropical watersheds; no other known lamprey lives in truly tropical waters.
Carpenter-Bundhoo received a $90,116 Queensland government grant that will allow him and Moffatt to map the fish's range and determine whether two smaller lampreys found in the state are species new to science, and supports new surveys of where each candidate occurs.

Peer-reviewed core, single-publisher relay
The central factual claims — populations in six tropical and subtropical watersheds, the 1,400 km offset from the previously known range, life-history figures, and identification difficulty — are attributed to a named peer-reviewed paper in Endangered Species Research and to two named researchers, which is solid grounding. But the cluster has exactly one publisher relaying one press release plus that paper, no independent scientist, and no description of the genetic or morphological evidence used to assign the K'gari animals to Mordacia praecox. The most striking claim (extinct in its original range) is quoted from institutional communications rather than evidenced in the reporting.
Institutional uptake, work not yet done
Real-world uptake is limited to two concrete institutional signals: publication of the range paper in a peer-reviewed journal, and a $90,116 Queensland government grant funding follow-on surveys and taxonomic work at Griffith University. Neither the extended range nor the two candidate species has yet been absorbed into formal recognition — the source states plainly that neither candidate can be named until the lab comparison is complete — and no listing change, management action, or third-party replication is reported.
Framing outruns the finding
Mildly overstated. The headline and lede present the fish as 'appearing' 870 miles beyond its range, which invites a discovery-of-a-migration reading, while the body supports only that the previously recorded range was incomplete. 'Vegan Dracula' and 'last bastion' add colour and existential stakes that the presented evidence does not establish — no survey data for the original range is given, and the possible new species are explicitly unconfirmed. The underlying claims themselves are sober and sourced, so the gap is in packaging rather than in substance.
Grant-and-press-release pipeline
The reporting chain has visible interests. The article's own sources list a Griffith University press release announcing new funding, and the researcher quoted stands to benefit from the grant he has just received; the university benefits from publicity around a charismatic, nicknameable animal and possible new species. The co-author is a Queensland government scientist and the funder is the Queensland government, so the finding, the funding decision and the promotion share institutional origin. The publisher's incentive is a high-engagement 'vegan Dracula' framing. Mitigating this: the underlying claim set is peer-reviewed and the article states the taxonomic limits explicitly.
Sound facts, thin sourcing base
Confidence is moderate. Individual claims are specific, internally consistent, attributed to named people and a named journal article, and the article is candid about what is unresolved. The limiting factors are structural: one publisher, one press release, one paper, no independent expert, no documentation of the identification evidence, and the two headline-adjacent propositions (last remaining population; two new species) remain unverified.
