The teeth came out of a rock shelter's bone sorting rather than a grave. That makes them the first tooth ornaments recorded outside a burial in northeastern Australia, and the site's surviving string suggests why.

Elders and Rangers from the Laura community named the plants most likely to have supplied the gum first, and only then did the instruments go to work [8]. Infrared analysis works by comparing a sample's absorption fingerprint against fingerprints from known resins, as co-author Carney Matheson of Griffith University describes it [10], which means the reference set you have collected sets the limit on what you can recognise. Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry then separates the mixture and weighs its components to name the plant [11]. Community knowledge defined the search space the chemistry was able to work in.
The tool question had to be closed first. Macropod teeth in this region were routinely worked into chisels and drills for scraping and engraving, using gums with a long local history in toolmaking [14], so on prior odds a resin-tipped wallaby tooth is a hafted implement. None of the twelve carries use wear [15], and what clings to them instead is plant fiber and a scrap of animal hide [16]. The resin sits as a ball at the narrow root tip, which the study reads as a stopper holding the tooth on a string [17].
Then the arithmetic on raw material: grass tree gum on all twelve, ironwood on one, leaving eleven that carry the slope plant alone [21]. Grass trees grow on the rocky slopes at the shelter today, while ironwood thrives along the nearby waterways [12][13]. One tooth in twelve is a thin base for a story about people working both settings.
What remains unresolved is whether people on the peninsula made and wore tooth ornaments as often as people in the southeast, where nearly all known examples come out of graves [6]. Cape York had produced none at all across decades of research [7], and the study authors say plainly that whether the practice was common or even known there remains a mystery [18]. Windmill Way is a preservation outlier: more than 500 pieces of plant-fiber string survive in it, alongside ocher, shell, worked wood and enough gnawed bone that the team nearly wrote the shelter off as a dingo den [5]. A deposit that keeps string can keep a ball of resin. That asymmetry may be most of what separates this shelter from every other one surveyed. Twelve teeth from one site establish presence; frequency needs more sites.
The comparative record amounts to one object, a wallaby-tooth necklace at the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford, whose old records say little [19]. The age is soft in the telling as well. The publisher's headline puts the ornaments at 1,200 years old while the text calls the resin more than 1,000 years old [20], and no dating method is described [22].

Twelve wallaby teeth, each with a blackish-brown ball of glue-like resin stuck to the tip of its root, were recovered from Windmill Way, a rock shelter in Quinkan Country in the southeast of the Cape York Peninsula, Queensland, Australia.
The study, published in Australian Archaeology, reports the teeth are the only known instance of this type of tooth ornament found outside burials in northeastern Australia and the first found in the Cape York Peninsula.
The first tooth was spotted by archaeologist Lynley Wallis of Griffith University while she was sorting animal remains from the shelter; she said she paused her automatic, robot-like sorting to take a better look.
Wallis handed the find to Sam Lowdown, a Traditional Owner and member of the Laura Ranger team, who examined it and identified the substance as resin.
Windmill Way has yielded more than 500 pieces of plant-fiber string, along with abundant ocher, shell, worked wood and thousands of gnawed animal bones, which initially led the team to almost write the shelter off as a dingo den.
Most Australian tooth ornaments are excavated from burials as grave goods, including headbands of kangaroo teeth, Tasmanian devil canine necklaces and wallaby-tooth headbands, almost all of which come from the southeast of the continent.

The substance of the find is well specified — twelve teeth, resin at the root tip, two instrument methods agreeing on grass tree gum, a named journal and DOI, and quotes from two of the authors. What holds it back is that all of it reaches us through a single outlet's summary, and the piece's own weakest point is a number in its headline: 1,200 years, with no dating method anywhere in the text and a looser 'more than 1,000' in the body.
Not an adoption story
There is nothing to count here — no releases, deployments, replications or downstream uses appear in this reporting, and the closest thing to uptake is the authors' failed hunt for a second comparable object. Scoring uptake would mean inventing it.
Headline is firmer than the text
The claims that matter are carefully hedged: the stringing-as-headband reading is offered as a suggestion, and the authors say outright that they do not know whether tooth jewellery was known on the peninsula at all. The overreach is narrower and sits in the framing — a precise '1,200-year-old' up top that the body walks back to 'more than 1,000' and never sources.
Author-quoted find, plus a donation ask
Everyone speaking is invested in the result: both quoted voices are Griffith University co-authors of the paper, and no outside archaeologist is asked whether twelve unworn teeth with resin stoppers must be jewellery. phys.org also closes with a direct appeal for reader donations. Neither pressure is hidden, and neither is severe — but the significance framing here is the study team's own.
Solid on chemistry, thin on chronology and corroboration
We are reasonably firm on what was found and how the resin was identified — that part is specific, method-backed and traceable to a published paper. We are much less firm on when, and on anything requiring a second opinion: one publisher, one paper, no independent commentary, and the comparative record consists of a museum necklace labelled only 'Australia'.
