Nvidia's talks to price Perplexity above $30bn are a demand contract with equity attached
The Information reports a valuation more than 50% above the last round, with a licensing arrangement considered alongside it. Buyers of AI search should read the roadmap as supplier-driven.
The Product Desk

What happened
- Nvidia has been in talks over an investment that would value Perplexity at more than $30bn, according to The Information.
- That price would be more than 50% above the roughly $20bn Perplexity carried after its last reported round.
- Perplexity was among the first named takers for Nvidia's Vera CPU.
- Alongside the equity, the two sides considered a technology licensing arrangement.
- Nvidia's equity commitments passed $40bn in 2026 alone, into companies that almost all spend the money on its own silicon.

Why it matters
- capability Licensing would move Nvidia from selling what AI search runs on to holding a position in how it is built, a place no ordinary supplier contract reaches.
- exposure Nvidia's own cost of borrowing now carries the read: credit default swaps hit record levels after the roughly $750bn of AI commitments were announced.
- constraint With no audited figures available, neither a buyer nor an incoming investor can test the multiple attached to the price, so diligence stops at the pitch deck.
- decision Perplexity must choose whether cheap compute buys the distribution it lacks against Google's own answers page and OpenAI's browser, or only lowers the cost of serving traffic it does not have.
Nvidia was on Perplexity's cap table before any of this, having joined earlier rounds that also drew in Jeff Bezos [11]. The proposed round is described as worth billions of dollars, with neither the size of Nvidia's stake nor the identity of the other participants reported [4]. So the equity is not new information. What is new is that the money would sit on top of a reference-customer relationship for unshipped silicon [13], which is a procurement arrangement wearing a term sheet.
The unresolved licensing strand matters more than the headline number. Neither company has commented, and it is not clear whether that component is still live or was set aside during the talks [5]. For anyone signing an enterprise deal with an AI search vendor, that ambiguity is the live question: whether the supplier of the compute holds a position in the product, or only sells the parts. A buyer cannot diligence a clause that may or may not exist, and the vendor has no obligation to say.
The distribution arithmetic explains why Perplexity would take the cheque on whatever terms come with it. Founded in 2022 and led by Aravind Srinivas, it answers queries directly rather than returning a page of links [14]. In August 2025 it made an unsolicited $34.5bn offer for Google's Chrome, roughly double its own valuation at the time, which Google never entertained [15]. Even at the price now under discussion, that bid would still be about $4.5bn, or 15%, larger than the whole company [18]. Comet, the browser it has pushed since, is the cheaper version of the same idea, sold as agentic browsing [8]. Compute arriving on favourable terms does nothing for the half of the cost base that is distribution.
Which is the practical reading for buyers. A roadmap financed by a chip vendor gets timed to that vendor's silicon, priced against capacity that vendor allocates, and shaped by whatever technology access sits outside the ordinary customer relationship. None of that is hidden. It just means the feature dates in an AI search proposal are a function of a supply relationship the customer is not party to, and the sensible contractual response is to ask what happens to pricing and latency commitments if the hardware slips.
Hold the number loosely. Perplexity has been the subject of reported valuations at $14bn, at $18bn and at $20bn over the past 18 months, each attributed to people familiar with the matter, and each of which took months to settle into a figure anyone would sign [16]. The pattern of these reports is that the valuation is the least durable part of the story. The supply relationship underneath it is the part that was already true before the talks leaked, and it will still be true if the round never closes.
What to watch
- Nvidia's November quarterly results, and whether a Perplexity stake appears in the investment line or the talks stay talks.
- Whether Perplexity's enterprise pricing or latency commitments start naming a hardware dependency, which would show the roadmap is scheduled around supply.
- A second cheque of this shape into a rival AI search vendor, which would make vendor-financed demand a policy rather than one relationship.

The two sides also considered a technology licensing arrangement alongside the equity investment.
- [3]
A valuation of more than $30bn would be a jump of over 50% on the roughly $20bn Perplexity carried after its last reported round.

The round is described as worth billions of dollars, but neither the size of Nvidia's proposed stake nor the identity of the other participants has been reported.

Neither company has commented publicly, and it is not clear whether the licensing component is still live or was set aside during negotiations.

Nvidia's equity commitments passed $40bn in 2026 alone, spread across model developers, neoclouds and infrastructure companies that almost without exception buy Nvidia silicon with the money.
- [7]
When Nvidia announced roughly $750bn of AI-related commitments, its own credit default swaps widened to record levels, which the source reads as a debt-market signal that the arrangement looks like a supplier financing its own order book.
- [8]
Perplexity has pushed its own AI browser, Comet, as the vehicle for what Srinivas calls agentic browsing.
- [9]
Google has folded conversational answers into its own results page and OpenAI has pushed ChatGPT further into search and shipped a browser, both arriving with distribution that Perplexity has to buy or build.
- [10]
Perplexity has not disclosed audited figures, and circulated estimates of its annualised run rate come from investor briefings and secondary reporting rather than the company, which makes any multiple on a $30bn valuation an exercise in faith.
- [11]
Nvidia is already on Perplexity's cap table, having taken part in earlier rounds that also drew in Jeff Bezos.
- [12]
A licensing deal, had it been agreed, would have given Perplexity access to Nvidia technology on terms outside the ordinary customer relationship, and given Nvidia a stake in how AI search gets built rather than merely in the hardware underneath it.
- [13]
Perplexity was among the first named takers for Nvidia's Vera CPU.
- [14]
Perplexity was founded in 2022, is led by Aravind Srinivas, and built a conversational search product that answers queries directly rather than returning a page of blue links.

Perplexity has been the subject of reported valuations at $14bn, $18bn and $20bn over the past 18 months, each attributed to people familiar with the matter and each taking months to settle into a number anyone would put their name to.
- [17]
Nvidia reports its next quarterly results in November, and whether a Perplexity stake appears in the investment line by then is presented as a measure of the pace of this cycle.
- [18]
Perplexity's August 2025 Chrome bid of $34.5bn is about $4.5bn, or roughly 15%, larger than the more-than-$30bn valuation now under discussion.
