Niccol's move to Starbucks delayed Chipotle CFO Jack Hartung's retirement by nearly a year

Starbucks has denied the Financial Times report that it worked with advisors on a Chipotle takeover; Chipotle has declined to comment. Two of the three finance executives in Chipotle's 2024 succession plan have since left, so any reunion with Brian Niccol would be partial.

What happened

  • Hartung, the only CFO Chipotle had ever had, was set to retire in March 2025, with Adam Rymer, then vice president of finance, taking over.
  • Starbucks announced Niccol as chairman and CEO just over a month after Chipotle publicized that succession plan in 2024.
  • Chipotle pushed up the start dates of Rymer and Jamie McConnell in their new roles to cover the gap Niccol's exit left.
  • Scott Boatwright became permanent Chipotle CEO on Nov. 11, 2024.

Why it matters

  • contradiction The Daily Upside says a deal could put Chipotle's finance team back under a familiar boss, yet its only evidence of a deal is a single FT report that the would-be buyer disputes.
  • precedent The one precedent in the record for Niccol and a finance seat is Starbucks's own CFO change about six months into his tenure, so retention of Chipotle's finance leaders after any deal cannot be assumed.
  • cost Chipotle moved McConnell up early and lost her to Sweetgreen in under a year, so the bench assembled in a hurry after Niccol's exit had thinned by September 2025.

Chipotle's 2024 succession plan named three finance people: Jack Hartung, who was to retire; Adam Rymer, then vice president of finance, who was to become CFO [1]; and Jamie McConnell, then vice president and controller, who was to become the first chief accounting and administrative officer [2]. Hartung has since retired [6], and McConnell has since gone to Sweetgreen as CFO [10]. That is two of the three gone [13].

The reshuffle took management time. Hartung postponed retirement and stayed on in broader roles, including president and chief strategy officer [4], then served as senior advisor until March, nearly a year after his original target [6]. A successor was ready, and the company still had to redraw its leadership arrangements before the scheduled handoff began [8]. It also wrote succession plans for all its executives [7].

Niccol's record at Starbucks cuts against a tidy reunion. Rachel Ruggeri, who had served as interim CEO before he arrived, left the CFO seat about six months after he took over [11], and Cathy Smith was announced from Nordstrom as her replacement in March 2025 [12]. Nothing disclosed ties Niccol to that exit. In our view, familiarity alone is thin grounds for expecting a finance team to stay together.

The denial and the report can both be true. The FT said Starbucks had worked with advisors in recent months [14], and Starbucks denied any intention of a purchase [15]. Working with advisors does not mean Starbucks intended to buy, and we think the likeliest outcome is advisor work that never became a bid. In that case Starbucks keeps its management attention on its "Back to Starbucks" campaign [12] and would spend none of it integrating a Chipotle.

Two other outcomes are open. A bid could follow anyway, and the finance bench Niccol knew would already be down two of three names [13]. Or nothing follows, and the CFO history is background only.

What to watch

  • Any confirmation from Starbucks or Chipotle, or a filing, that talks took place would show the denial covered intent only and would overturn our view that advisor work never became a bid.
  • Chipotle's next filing listing its finance officers would show whether Rymer still holds the CFO seat, which decides whether the count is two of three or worse.
