Nvidia weighs buying Reflection AI, the $25 billion open-model lab it already backs with $800 million
Nvidia is in talks to buy Reflection AI or add to the $800 million it has already invested, the Financial Times reported. Owning the open-weight lab, last valued at $25 billion, would put the chipmaker in the model business alongside the AI labs that buy its GPUs.

What happened
- The FT said the talks are early and could produce an acqui-hire, with Nvidia hiring staff and licensing technology, a form that might avoid a lengthy regulatory review.
- An agreement could be reached within weeks, according to the FT's sources, though the discussions could still fall apart.
- Reflection was founded in 2024 by former DeepMind researchers Misha Laskin and Ioannis Antonoglou and builds tools that automate software development.
- Reflection released its first open-weight model, Beam, on October 5, a 501-billion-parameter mixture-of-experts system trained on 23.8 trillion tokens.
- Reflection has compute deals worth up to $6.3 billion with SpaceX, still described as a potential partnership, and more than $1 billion with Nebius.
Why it matters
- exposure AI labs that buy Nvidia GPUs would face a chip supplier that also owns an open-weight rival aimed at the enterprises and governments shopping for an alternative to proprietary labs.
- decision Choosing an acqui-hire over a purchase would trade full ownership for a quicker path past regulators. It would also force a separate answer on who carries Reflection's SpaceX and Nebius compute deals.
- contradiction Confidence in the talks depends on the source: Crypto Briefing treated them as an unsubstantiated X post, while the FT cites people with direct knowledge, though Reuters could not verify it.
Nvidia's existing stake is a small part of any purchase price. The $800 million it has put into Reflection is 3.2% of the $25 billion pre-money valuation from the startup's latest round [3][5][20]. That valuation is about 3.1 times the $8 billion set in earlier rounds [5][21]. A buyout near the last mark would go almost entirely to other holders, a group that includes Sequoia and Lightspeed [17]. Bloomberg Law, summarising the FT, said the terms under discussion could not be established [4].
Reflection's spending commitments are far larger than Nvidia's check. Its compute deals with SpaceX and Nebius come to roughly $7.3 billion at headline value [22], about nine times what Nvidia has invested [24]. The two companies already work together on GPU supply and through Nvidia's Nemotron Coalition for open models [14]. The 250 MW data center Reflection plans in South Korea with Shinsegae Group is set to run on Nvidia technology [13]. Crypto Briefing's case for a deal is that companies running open-weight models on their own hardware need their own compute, and that compute often means Nvidia GPUs [19].
We think the conflict with customers is real but narrower than an outright purchase implies. Reflection built Beam to compete in coding and agentic tasks with lower-cost Chinese models such as DeepSeek and Kimi [11], and pitches it against Z.ai's GLM-5.2 [18]. The counter-thesis is in the same pitch. Reflection's target buyers are Western enterprises and governments that want customizable models and an option outside the big proprietary labs [16]. In our view those buyers are the proprietary labs' prospects too. Nvidia sells chips to many AI labs, and owning a model developer could make it a competitor to some of its own customers, Crypto Briefing wrote [15].
Of the outcomes the FT described, only a full acquisition makes Nvidia an owner. A larger stake keeps it a minority backer and GPU partner [1][7]. We would be wrong if a purchase closes and Nvidia then sells Beam into enterprise and government contracts that the closed labs are also bidding for. A deal that stops at a bigger check would leave the thesis untested. Beam, the asset an owner would be buying, is Reflection's first model and came out five days before the FT report [10][23].
What to watch
- Whether Nvidia or Reflection confirms the talks, and whether the FT's timetable of weeks ends in a bigger stake, an acqui-hire or a purchase.
- Any disclosed price set against the $25 billion pre-money mark from Reflection's latest round.
- Whether the SpaceX compute arrangement, still described as potential, is finalized, and which entity holds it if the deal is an acqui-hire.
