Starknet's Shadow Accounts hide the owner of a DeFi position while publishing the position
Starknet and StarkWare unveiled Shadow Accounts on October 13, 2026, per-app DeFi addresses that users fund from shielded STRK20 balances. Their balances, transactions and positions stay public, so what users gain is a severed link to the main wallet.

Users fund Shadow Accounts from shielded balances in the STRK20 privacy pool. A contract cuts the link to the primary wallet. Onchain watchers can see balances, transactions and positions. Builders integrate via Starknet Wallet API and starknet.js. A Vesu Prime vSTRK vault demo went live on mainnet.

What happened
- A contract called ShadowAccountAnonymizer sits between the privacy pool and the shadow address to cut the connection back to the primary wallet, according to Crypto Briefing.
- Once an app integrates, a user connects a wallet, switches from public to private mode and deposits into a vault, and the shadow account holds the position until a withdrawal into a shielded balance.
- A demonstration integration with Vesu Prime's vSTRK vault went live on mainnet at launch, and Crypto Briefing reports the first production integration was scheduled for October 14, 2026.
Why it matters
- exposure Because the address persists and stays visible, a running history of deposits, exits and sizes builds up under one pseudonym that anyone can read.
- capability Users can split lending, liquidity and trading across separate identities, so a watcher who finds one address sees just that one strategy.
- decision App teams decide whether to integrate, and StarkWare's list runs to seven categories beyond vaults against one vault with a demonstration live.
A shadow account's usefulness and its weakness are the same property. The address is persistent [1], and according to Starknet its balances, transactions and positions remain publicly visible onchain [3], so a single public pseudonym accrues each deposit and withdrawal, plus every change in position size, inside one app. Someone watching can see a position build and exit. The feature obscures only the link back to the funding wallet [6].
We think the gain is substantial for the problem Crypto Briefing says the feature targets. That problem is wallet address reuse: when one wallet handles everything, anyone watching can piece together a user's positions, habits and holdings, and that exposes users to unwanted tracking and targeted attacks [12]. Per-app addresses cut at exactly that. A user could keep one identity for lending, another for providing liquidity and a third for trading, with no onchain thread tying them together or to the main address [8], so a watcher who finds the lending address sees just that lending position.
The view fails if an analyst can pair a withdrawal from the shielded pool with a deposit into a shadow account by amount and timing; if a position is large or odd enough to identify its owner with no wallet link at all; or if so few apps integrate that the unlinking covers a sliver of what users do. The sources do not report how many users hold shielded STRK20 balances, and that count sets how hard the first pairing is. The framework behind those balances is only a few months old, introduced in June [9].
Developers reach the feature through two tools, Starknet Wallet API version 0.10.4 and starknet.js version 10.8.0 [14]. Crypto Briefing wrote, citing what it called "the research findings", that apps can plug in the feature without being reworked [15]. That is a single-source claim about integration cost, and the first production integration will test it.
What to watch
- Whether production integrations beyond Vesu Prime's vSTRK vault appear after the October 14 integration, and how many apps follow.
- Any analysis that pairs STRK20 pool withdrawals with shadow-account deposits by amount and timing, and any published count of users in the pool.
- Whether StarkWare moves Shadow Accounts past vaults into lending or derivatives, the first of the seven categories it listed.

Once integrated into a DeFi application, the feature lets users connect their wallets, switch from public to private mode and deposit assets into a vault; their Shadow Accounts then maintain positions until they withdraw funds back into a shielded balance.
