Bitcoin miners are billing about 550 MW of more than 4 GW signed for AI work

IREN shares rose 5% premarket on a reported Anthropic cloud contract that neither company has confirmed. CoinShares puts miners' AI and HPC backlog above $100 billion with only about 550 MW billing, so a signature is the first of several steps to revenue.

What happened

  • Blockspace, citing The Information, reported the contract on October 12 without giving its value, capacity or delivery timeline.
  • In an August 27 announcement, IREN said a new customer described as a leading AI lab had signed, and it did not name the customer.
  • IREN reported $4 billion in contracted annualized run-rate revenue for its 2026 capacity, with only $1 billion operating as of August 26.
  • In its SEC disclosure, IREN warned that "recognized revenue may be materially lower."
  • IREN has delivered the 50-MW Horizon 1 to Microsoft, is commissioning Horizon 2, and expects Horizons 3 and 4 in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to resources.

Why it matters

  • constraint Mining cannot pay for the retrofit: Bitcoin closed the second quarter at $58,400, about 22.6% under the $75,500 per coin miners cite as cash cost, so conversion money has to come from customers and lenders.
  • decision Each miner that cancels rig orders, as Core Scientific did for over $41.9 million, stops adding to the business that earns today and depends on its AI build arriving on time.
  • contradiction IREN's $1 billion operating run-rate would be about 91% of the $1.1 billion CoinShares counts for all miners, so either IREN is nearly the whole sector or the two figures measure different things.

Divide 550 by 4,000 and billing is 13.75% of signed capacity [23], a ceiling, because CoinShares says miners have contracted more than 4 GW [6]. At least 3,450 MW is not billing [24]. CoinShares puts the cost of building a megawatt for AI at $8 million to $15 million, against under $1 million for bitcoin mining [17]. If all of the unbilled remainder still had to be built, that is $27.6 billion to $51.75 billion [25]. The sources did not disclose whether the per-megawatt figure includes GPUs, so treat the total as a sense of scale. The 550 MW that bills supports about $1.1 billion a year [5], or $2.0 million a megawatt [26], and that makes a megawatt's build cost four to 7.5 years of its current revenue before operating costs [34].

Debt is the second cost. The $3.6 billion at 6% for Microsoft's GPU projects and the $2.4 billion at 9% for Mackenzie growth [15] each cost $216 million a year in interest, $432 million in total at a blended 7.2% [28]. If all of it were drawn, that interest would equal 43% of the $1 billion run-rate now operating and 10.8% of the $4 billion contracted [29]. Prepayments that cover 45% to 55% of GPU costs on new contracts [16] would pull the drawn balance lower.

The income statement shows how early the ramp is. AI cloud revenue grew 7.85-fold [33], yet mining still brought in $578.2 million [11]. The $702.6 million net loss falls to $63.8 million once the $638.8 million non-cash impairment, mostly from decommissioning mining rigs, is removed [12][32].

We think signed backlog overstates near-term cash by a wide margin, and that billing megawatts is the figure to track. The counter-thesis has numbers behind it: IREN has 25% of its contracted run-rate operating [27], against the sector's 13.75% ceiling.

The Anthropic report can go several ways. IREN or Anthropic confirms it with a value, capacity and date. Or the contract is confirmed and Horizons 3 and 4, whose commissioning depends on equipment, power and customer approvals [14], slip past the fourth quarter. Or the unnamed lab in IREN's August 27 notice [7] is not Anthropic. The Cryptopolitan and Yahoo Finance accounts both rest on the one report in The Information [2][3], so together they count as one source.

The one deal in these sources with a date, a value and a term is Akamai's, announced September 24, 2026: $11.6 billion over seven years [20], about $1.66 billion a year [31], with a warrant for up to 5% of Akamai going to Anthropic [21]. It covers CPU workloads, not the GPU capacity miners are building [22], but its annual value is above the $1.1 billion CoinShares counts across all billing miners [5]. We would be wrong if the operating run-rate closed most of its gap to the $4 billion contracted once Horizons 3 and 4 are commissioned, with no rise in borrowing beyond the facilities already secured.

What to watch

  • IREN or Anthropic confirming the contract, with a value, capacity and delivery date.
  • Whether Horizon 2 finishes commissioning and Horizons 3 and 4 land in the fourth quarter of 2026.
  • CoinShares's next count of billing megawatts against the 550 MW now reported.
