What happened

  • Yonhap reported that the ES 350e is rated for up to 478 kilometers on a charge and can go from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 28 minutes.
  • The ES 500e adds Direct4 all-wheel drive and a combined output of 347 horsepower, according to Seoul Economic Daily.
  • The new body is 5,140 millimeters long, 165 millimeters longer than the previous generation, with a 2,950-millimeter wheelbase that gained 80 millimeters.
  • Lexus built the car on the GA-K platform, which can take either a battery-electric or a hybrid powertrain.

Why it matters

  • decision A Premium-trim buyer now chooses a powertrain on home charging access and the 478 km rating, because the electric car is the cheaper one.
  • constraint One GA-K body takes either powertrain, so a weak electric order book would not leave Lexus with a model it cannot sell; we'd expect the hybrid to absorb the volume.
  • contradiction The same 71.6 million won is US$53,564 in Yonhap and $50,000 in Seoul Economic Daily, implied rates of 1,337 and 1,432 won to the dollar, so any comparison with US pricing should start from the won figure.

The price list shows the intent more plainly than the launch language does, or rather it shows one intent at the entry trim and another at the top. The ES 350h Premium starts at 72.9 million won [7], and Lexus Korea said it priced the ES 350e Premium 1.3 million won below the comparable hybrid to ease the cost burden for customers considering its first BEV sedan [10]. That puts the 350e Premium at 71.6 million won, the same figure at which the electric range starts, and the discount at 1.8% of the hybrid price [17]. At the other end the direction flips. The ES 500e Luxury costs 84.9 million won [6], 4.1 million won or 5.1% above the 80.8 million won ES 350h [13]. Both ends of the 71.6 million to 84.9 million won range Yonhap reports for the full lineup are electric trims [3][6].

We think the electric ES is the lead product and the hybrid is the insurance, though one fact cuts the other way. Five of the nine variants are electric, or 56% [15], and the 350e is the trim Lexus priced down [10]. Against that, Lexus also gave the hybrid a smaller, lighter sixth-generation 2.5-liter system and, for the first time in an ES hybrid, E-Four all-wheel drive [8]. That is engineering spent on the car we are calling the insurance. Konyama Manabu, president of Lexus Korea, framed the launch as an addition: he said the All New ES marks a new turning point that expands electrified options to include a BEV [11].

The charging rating is easy to check against the battery. If the 74.69 kWh figure [4] is the capacity being charged, the 70 points between 10 and 80 percent is about 52 kWh, delivered in 28 minutes [2] at an average of roughly 112 kW [14].

Neither report includes a sales target or a powertrain split. Registration data from the first few months would settle the question: if the hybrid takes most of the ES volume, the 1.3 million won cut [10] did not move buyers and the hedge reading wins.

What to watch

  • Whether Lexus Korea keeps the 350e Premium 1.3 million won under the 72.9 million won hybrid once launch pricing ends.
  • Independent tests of the ES 350e against its rated 478 km and the 28-minute 10-80 percent charge.
