South Korea has written 2.3 times 2025's Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions in eight months
South Korea logged 2,789,992 Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions through August, about 2.3 times all of 2025. The data came from the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service via a lawmaker's office, and the monthly run-rate now sits near 465,000.

What happened
- The first five months of 2026 produced 1,457,639 Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions, already above the 1,222,574 recorded for all of 2025.
- Between January and July, combined monthly prescriptions went from 250,121 to 466,272, a rise of more than 86% over the six months.
- From January to August, Mounjaro prescriptions rose 2.3 times to 404,602 a month while Wegovy fell 18.5% to 60,763.
- A month of Mounjaro at the 2.5 mg dose costs about 10,000 yen (roughly 85,000 won) in Japan, against 280,000 to 350,000 won in Korea.
- Korea Customs detected 5,030 illegal imports of obesity drugs in the first eight months of 2026, against four cases in all of last year.
Why it matters
- cost Moving from 5 mg to 7.5 mg raises Mounjaro's ex-factory price by 152,070 won, or 41.2%, a step every patient who needs more than 5 mg has to clear.
- exposure Mounjaro added 228,998 monthly prescriptions against a net gain of 215,244, so the market's growth rests on one product while Wegovy shrinks.
- contradiction The cumulative multiple points up, but August's 465,365 prescriptions were 907 fewer than July's 466,272, so the latest month shows no growth.
The report gives two causes for the rise: telemedicine platforms where patients pick a drug and dose before finding a clinic willing to prescribe it [22], and cheaper Mounjaro in Japan [9]. The counts come from the Drug Utilization Review system [1], and the report did not disclose how many of them came through telemedicine or how many patients stand behind them.
A medical industry official, unnamed in the report, said wider access is a positive development but that choosing a drug and dose before finding a prescriber warrants caution [13]. "GLP-1 obesity drugs are not simple diet aids but prescription medicines that require a doctor's order," the official said [14].
The two causes pull the series in different directions. We would expect a prescription obtained in Japan to be absent from a Korean review-system count, so each patient on the "sushi-zaro" route is one the 2.79 million [3] cannot see. Customs sees only what it stops, and of the items held this year 63.3% came from Japan and 21.8% from China [12].
Korea's price for the lowest dose is 3.3 to 4.1 times Japan's [19]. A patient who crosses saves 195,000 to 265,000 won a month [19], and Japan's health ministry widened the gap in August with a 25% cut [10].
Price also shapes dosing at home. In August Korea wrote 173,340 prescriptions for the 5 mg Mounjaro dose and 38,242 for 7.5 mg, 77.9% fewer, and the report reads that as cost weighing on patients [6]. The comparison is two doses in one month, so some of the gap may be patients who stayed on 5 mg. The 12.5 mg and 15 mg doses grew 12.7 times and 20.5 times between June and August [8], yet together they came to 4,746 prescriptions, about 1% of the 465,365 combined prescriptions that month [21][15].
We think demand is real and the 2.3 times multiple undersells it, or rather undersells the current pace, because it sets eight months of 2026 against twelve of 2025 [3][2]. June through August alone came to 1,332,353 prescriptions, 9% above the whole of 2025 [20]. If the last four months of 2026 only repeat August's 465,365, the year closes at 4,651,452, about 3.8 times 2025 [23][15]. The counter-case is that the climb from January to July [4] has already stopped.
A second counter-case fits the same flat month [16]. Patients moving to Japan, where the 25% price cut landed in August [10], would flatten the Korean count while demand kept rising. Plateau and leak would both produce a flat Korean count. A September at or below 465,365 [15] would end our claim that volume is still climbing.
What to watch
- September's prescription count against August's 465,365: a figure at or below it would end the case that Korean volume is still climbing.
- Whether customs holds keep rising now that Japan's 25% August cut has widened the price gap, and how much of the 5,030 cases comes from Japan.
- Whether 7.5 mg Mounjaro prescriptions, 38,242 in August, rise relative to 5 mg's 173,340, which would show patients stepping up despite the 41.2% price step.

Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions totaled 1,457,639 in the first five months of this year, according to obesity drug prescription data cleared through the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) system, submitted by the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service to the office of Rep. Kim Yoon of the Democratic Party of Korea.

Through August, the cumulative total of Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions reached 2,789,992, roughly 2.3 times last year's annual figure.

Combined Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions rose from 250,121 in January to 466,272 in July, an increase of more than 86% in six months.

Between January and August, Wegovy prescriptions fell 18.5% to 60,763 from 74,517, while Mounjaro prescriptions rose 2.3 times to 404,602 from 175,604.
- [6]
In August there were 173,340 prescriptions for the 5 mg dose of Mounjaro and 38,242 for the 7.5 mg dose, 77.9% fewer; the report suggests cost is weighing on patients' decisions to step up their dose.
- [7]
The ex-factory price of Mounjaro is 521,377 won for 7.5 mg, up from 369,307 won for 5 mg.
- [8]
In June there were 224 prescriptions for the 12.5 mg dose and 93 for the 15 mg dose; by August those had risen to 2,837 and 1,909, increases of 12.7 times and 20.5 times in two months.
- [9]
A one-month supply of the lowest 2.5 mg dose of Mounjaro can be prescribed in Japan for about 10,000 yen (roughly 85,000 won), compared with 280,000 to 350,000 won in Korea; demand for 'sushi-zaro', buying the medication in Japan where prices are lower, is also cited as driving the increase.
- [10]
Japan's Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare cut Mounjaro's price by 25% in August, which widened the price gap with Korea further.
- [11]
The Korea Customs Service detected just four cases of illegal imports of obesity drugs including Mounjaro and Wegovy last year, but 5,030 cases in the first eight months of this year.
- [12]
Of the items held at customs this year, 63.3% arrived from Japan and 21.8% from China.

August 2026 combined Wegovy and Mounjaro prescriptions were 465,365.
- [16]
August combined prescriptions (465,365) were 907 fewer than July's 466,272, a fall of about 0.2%.
- [17]
Mounjaro added 228,998 monthly prescriptions between January and August against a net combined gain of 215,244, about 106% of the net gain, while Wegovy lost 13,754.
- [18]
Moving from 5 mg to 7.5 mg raises Mounjaro's ex-factory price by 152,070 won, or 41.2%.
- [19]
Korea's 280,000 to 350,000 won for a month of 2.5 mg Mounjaro is 3.3 to 4.1 times Japan's roughly 85,000 won, a saving of 195,000 to 265,000 won per patient per month.
- [20]
June through August 2026 prescriptions came to 1,332,353, about 9% above all of 2025.
- [21]
The 12.5 mg and 15 mg doses together came to 4,746 prescriptions in August, about 1% of August's 465,365 combined prescriptions.
- [22]
Driving the increase is the spread of so-called 'drug shopping', in which patients first choose the drug and dose they want on telemedicine platforms and then look for a clinic willing to prescribe it.
- [23]
If September to December each match August's 465,365, 2026 would close at 4,651,452 prescriptions, about 3.8 times 2025's 1,222,574.
