Deputy tells shift managers to treat 18 to 20 November as one GTA 6 absence window
Deputy found shift absenteeism almost doubled on Overwatch 2's Thursday launch, the closest match it sees to GTA 6's release on Thursday 19 November 2026. Absences rose a day early at every launch it studied, so managers need to budget cover from Wednesday to Friday.

What happened
- The chief executive of the parent company of GTA 6's publisher has said no further delays are planned for the game.
- HCAMag reported that 1.5 million workers in the US alone are expected to take release day off.
- Men's absenteeism rose 315.06 per cent week on week at the Baldur's Gate 3 launch, a figure Deputy says sits on a small 3.09 per cent baseline.
- On each launch day in Deputy's dataset, women's rostered hours exceeded men's by about 30,000 to 50,000.
Why it matters
- cost Over-rostering from Wednesday to Friday means paying for spare shifts that may go unworked across three days, while running lean pushes the cost onto the Thursday floor.
- decision Swap windows, later starts and day trades for 18 to 20 November have to be settled before the rota is drawn, so the policy choice comes weeks ahead of the staffing one.
- precedent Whatever flexibility is granted for GTA 6 is likely to become what staff ask for at the next major release, if Hale is right that frontline workers treat such events as non-negotiable.
Deputy's comparison depends on the weekday. It measures each day against the average of the three previous same weekdays [3]. Elden Ring's Friday launch barely registered on that measure, because Friday absence is already the highest of the week as staff take long weekends [11]. Overwatch 2's wide release was a full Thursday launch [10]. "Since GTA 6 lands on a Thursday, HR leaders must anticipate a severe mid-week disruption mirroring the Overwatch 2 pattern," said Ciaran Hale, Deputy's chief technology officer [24][7].
The highest Overwatch 2 figure Deputy quotes came the day before a launch. On the eve of the early access launch, absenteeism reached 18.02 per cent, 0.6 points above the 17.42 per cent recorded on launch day itself [5][19]. Before the wide release it sat at 12.54 per cent [5]. "The disruption starts the day before launch as workers clear their schedules to download the massive file and play the second the servers open," Hale said [6]. For GTA 6 that eve is Wednesday 18 November. Hale said HR teams "must flag the entire window from Wednesday 18 November to Friday 20 November as high-risk" [12].
The fair objection is that a company selling workforce management software has a reason to find a staffing problem, and three launches is a small sample [2]. The article does not say how many employers or shifts sit behind the percentages. Deputy did flag its own small-base problem. Taken from the 3.09 per cent baseline it cites, the Baldur's Gate 3 jump for men comes to roughly 12.8 per cent on launch day [13][21]. I think the cheaper parts of its advice, opening shift swaps weeks ahead and surveying availability early, hold up even if the forecast proves high [18].
Deputy takes the gap in rostered hours to mean that each woman who calls in removes more coverage than a man would [14]. That follows only if women's individual shifts run longer. A larger total can also come from more women on the roster. Hale's conclusion does not depend on which it is: "Rather than guessing who will take leave, managers should use this insight to justify over-rostering the entire launch window," he said [15].
An IGN poll from the GTA 5 launch suggests most of the absence can be seen coming. Of 10,995 gamers it asked, 46 per cent had already booked the day off and 19 per cent said they would call in sick, about 2.4 planned absences for each sick call [1][20]. That was a gaming site's own audience, 13 years ago [9]. A leave request arrives weeks out. A sick call arrives that morning. Hale's advice aims to turn the second into the first: "Instead, employers should offer legitimate flexibility, such as early shift swaps, later starts, or trading a day, which reduces the incentive for employees to fake an illness," he said [17]. He argued against enforcement: "Policing sick leave damages trust and fails to solve the immediate problem of an empty shop floor" [16].
What to watch
- Any move of GTA 6 off its Thursday date; Deputy's Elden Ring result suggests a Friday release would register far less against its baseline.
- Whether Deputy publishes the number of employers, shifts and countries behind its three-launch figures.
- The volume of leave and swap requests for 18 to 20 November in the weeks before launch, as an early read on how much absence is planned.
