Rockstar puts GTA 6's radio and new podcasts in players' earbuds for on-foot listening
Rockstar says GTA 6 players can listen to six revealed radio stations and new on-demand podcasts on foot, ahead of the game's November 19 launch. Radio in the series has only ever played in vehicles, so the soundtrack now follows the player across Leonida.

What happened
- Players listen by connecting to Jason and Lucia's in-game smartphones through a pair of in-game headphones or earbuds.
- The first six stations are Cocoteo FM, Back Country Radio, AfroBank FM, The Chamber 106.6, Flash FM and Dirty South Classics.
- Rockstar calls the lineup the series' "biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet," according to The Verge.
- The stations can be sampled now on Rockstar's website, alongside six soundtrack singles featuring artists such as Yung Lean and Travis Scott.

Why it matters
- capability Hosts and segments that players used to hear only while driving can now run through any part of a session, so the writing behind the stations gets heard for more of the play time.
- constraint Both reports treat six as a partial count, so Rockstar's claim to the series' biggest radio selection can only be judged from a sample until launch.
- decision A buyer deciding on a preorder now can judge the music from the web preview, but on-foot listening and the podcasts can only be judged once the game is out.
Mud Dog Mike is a roving reporter and swamp meteorologist on Back Country Radio, and he checks in from his airboat [11]. In earlier Grand Theft Auto games, a player could hear a segment like his only from inside a vehicle [2]. In GTA 6 his report can play while Jason or Lucia is walking down a street [2].
The announcement contains two product changes. The first takes an existing feature, scheduled radio, out of the car [2]. The second is a new format. Rockstar says "for the first time ever, Grand Theft Auto VI introduces a series of on-demand podcasts" [4]. A station plays on Rockstar's schedule whether or not the player chose it. A podcast plays only when the player picks one.
When a team makes a feature portable, it usually assumes that availability equals use: if the radio can follow the player, the player will keep it on. What players actually do with audio on foot will show up after launch. It will be visible in how long they leave a station running outside the car, and in whether someone who finishes one podcast starts another. That data cannot exist before November 19 [5].
The range claim can be checked now, and the two reports describe it differently. Dexerto lists the six genres as pop, metal, country, Latin music, African music and southern hip-hop [7]. The Verge describes the lineup as "ranging from talk radio to classic rock" [9]. In Dexerto's account, The Chamber 106.6 plays metal from the 1980s and beyond, hosted by DJ Kerry and DJ Tom [12].
The Verge places the podcasts in a wider push for realism, next to details from Netflix's extended preview such as a mechanic for holding hands and police NPCs who remember what a player looks like [13]. Neither report says how many podcasts ship or how long they run.
The on-foot change is for the player who spends long stretches out of the car. It is also for the people who write segments like Mud Dog Mike's, because their work now reaches players who are not driving [2].
For a team deciding whether to take a feature out of the context it was built for, I'd use a two-by-two. One axis is who controls timing: the publisher's schedule or the user's choice. The other is where the feature works: one context or everywhere. Earlier GTA radio sat in schedule and one context. GTA 6 radio moves to schedule and everywhere. The podcasts sit in choice and everywhere. That box has the most to prove, because a scheduled feature is heard by default and a chosen one is heard only when someone picks it. The figure that would settle it is repeat use: how often a player who tried one episode on foot starts the next.
What to watch
- Whether Rockstar reveals stations beyond the first six before November 19, including a talk station of the kind The Verge's description suggests.
- How many on-demand podcasts ship at launch and how long the episodes run.
- Player reports after launch on whether people keep stations or podcasts playing on foot or switch the audio off outside the car.
