A power bank fails in one of two places. It fails at a bag-drop desk, where a cell nobody can vouch for comes out of the carry-on, or it fails in a drawer a year later, puffed up enough that nobody wants to plug it in again. Belkin's answer to both arrives as compliance claims rather than a chemistry lecture.
Start with what the cell actually does. The gel layer sits alongside the liquid electrolyte rather than replacing it [3], so the flammable part is still in there; what Belkin says changes is the risk of runaway, fire and swelling, plus stable charging from 0 to 40C [4]. The part a buyer can reason about is the sensor loop: one analogue and one digital sensor, sampling every 250 milliseconds, which is four checks a second, cutting power when the cell goes out of range [5][6]. Then the paperwork. Belkin says the design meets UL2056:2025 and TSA carry-on guidance [6], set against two years of airlines tightening rules on lithium cells in cabin baggage [7].
Now the money. The $69.99 Slim Magnetic holds 5,000mAh [10], which works out at about 1.4 cents per mAh [1]. The conventional 11,000mAh pack in the same release, at $59.99 [18], costs about 0.55 cents per mAh [2], so the semi-solid unit is roughly 2.6 times the price for each unit of stored energy [3]. The 22,000mAh conventional model at $99.99 lands near 0.45 cents per mAh, about a third of the Slim's rate [7]. Even inside the new range, the $89.99 10,000mAh model is the better per-mAh buy, at roughly 0.9 cents, with the Slim about 1.6 times dearer [4]. Nobody is paying that gap for capacity. They are paying it for 8.8mm and a credit-card footprint [10], and for the safety file.
The longevity number needs the same treatment. Belkin's "up to three times longer" rests on a footnote about retaining up to 80% capacity after 1,000 charge cycles [8], and the five-year gloss assumes a full charge and discharge every two days [9]. Run that out and 1,000 cycles at one every two days is 2,000 days, about five and a half years [5]. That is a cycle-life spec, and the 80% figure is the line a warranty would have to be written against if it were ever tested in the field.
One usage detail that matters more than the headline wattage: plug in a second device and the Slim drops to 5W wirelessly and 12W over USB-C [12]. A pack sold on thinness for the pocket is a single-device pack in practice.
So separate the three things on offer. There is capacity per dollar, where the conventional packs win outright. There is thickness, which is the only place the chemistry earns its price today. And there is the compliance file, which decides whether the kit reaches the destination at all. Teams tend to buy the first column and argue about it on a spec sheet. The failure that actually costs them is the third.
The forcing question for anyone specifying travel kit is which of those two failures showed up last year. If the answer is swollen units and refused bags, $69.99 buys you a standard number and a cutoff you can describe to a security officer. If the answer is people running flat by mid-afternoon, the $99.99 pack holds more than four times the charge [18][7], and the chemistry is somebody else's problem for another generation.

Belkin announced three product lines at IFA 2026 in Berlin on Thursday, arriving as three separate releases covering portable power, trackers and chargers, and audio.
The headline part of Belkin's IFA announcements is the UltraCharge Pro range, built on what Belkin calls BoostSolid Cell.

One release, two faithful retellings
Every load number here — 8.8mm, 250 milliseconds, 80% after 1,000 cycles, UL2056:2025 — comes out of Belkin's own launch document. The Verge and TNW report it separately and agree, but neither charged a pack, ran a cycle, or checked a certification listing, and the compliance line the whole carry-on argument rests on appears in TNW alone. Two consistent retellings of one seller's paperwork is not corroboration.
Announced; September at the earliest
Nothing in this story has reached a buyer. The Slim Magnetic ships in September and the 10K is a price on a sheet; the only shipping evidence anywhere in the reporting belongs to other companies, with The Verge placing BMX, Kuxiu and Zens in market first. What can be counted today is announcement volume — power banks, trackers, audio — not uptake.
Cycle life sold as calendar years
The overstatement isn't in the chemistry, it's in the arithmetic. "Up to 3x longer" shrinks, in Belkin's own footnote, to 80% capacity after 1,000 cycles, and the five-year headline only holds if you drain and refill the pack every second day. TNW does that division in public; The Verge repeats the 3x line as a reason to accept a higher price. Work the same launch out per mAh and the semi-solid pack costs roughly 2.6 times Belkin's own $59.99 11,000mAh brick — a premium the coverage names but never quantifies.
The seller's day, the seller's numbers
A trade-show calendar set this agenda. Belkin timed three releases to IFA, wrote the specs and set the recommended prices, and both outlets published inside hours off those documents. The Verge's conclusion that lifespan "should outweigh" the premium is effectively a buying recommendation built on an unverified claim. The only friction applied to the seller's framing comes from TNW reading the small print aloud and holding the launch against automotive timelines.
Firm on specs, open on durability
The descriptive layer is safe to lean on: prices, capacities, wattages and dates are cheap to state, and the two accounts do not contradict each other on any of them. Judgements about safety and longevity are a different order of question and cannot be settled from here — they need packs in hands and someone willing to run a thousand cycles.
