Meta says it fixed Ray-Ban glasses that recorded conversations without the wake phrase
Meta says it fixed a bug that let Ray-Ban Meta glasses record conversations without the wake phrase. One user saw it on three pairs with the setting off. Stored voice logs are what teams should check.

Five actors. People were recorded without the 'Hey, Meta' prompt in a bug Meta says is fixed. A Reddit user says it hit three pairs, setting off, and the app saved audio and transcripts. Meta says users can delete voice logs in settings; it has not said what caused it.

What happened
- Android Authority reported the user discussions on Tuesday, and Meta's reply to it came later the same day.
- 9to5Google noted that the glasses still light an LED on the inner frame during these recordings, which are audio only.
- Android Authority said it could not replicate the problem before Meta announced the fix, and only a few reports are online.
- Ars Technica asked Meta how many devices were affected and what it is doing to prevent a repeat, and said it would update if Meta replied.
Why it matters
- Who's exposed exposure Transcripts of conversations the wearer never started sit in an account history. People talking near a wearer can end up in a record they did not agree to.
- What doesn't add up contradiction Meta calls the issue resolved while the cause is unconfirmed, so a buyer has no way to check the fix and Meta's word is the only evidence it worked.
- Who has to decide decision Meta's statement leaves cleanup to each user's settings. A team that allows these glasses has to decide whether reviewing voice logs belongs in its own policy.
Kindly-Audience-137, a Reddit user, said the Meta AI app "saves audio recordings and text transcripts of these conversations in my conversation history." [9] The user said the "Respond without Hey Meta" setting was turned off. [8] "I believe this deserves a serious technical investigation. Customers should not have to wonder whether their private conversations are being captured when they have not intentionally activated their glasses' AI assistant," the user said. [10]
The user reports it on three pairs, each with the setting off, and a transcript showed up in the app anyway. [8] [9]
Meta's reply to Android Authority read: "This issue has been resolved. People can manage, review, and delete voice logs of their interactions with Meta AI via settings at any time." [3] The second sentence sends users to their own settings to review and delete logs. Meta did not say what caused the recordings. The user said they "first noticed this behavior after a recent firmware update," and Meta has not confirmed that a faulty update was behind it. [11]
Meta's earlier privacy fix was a mandatory update that disables the camera if someone tampers with the LED privacy light, 9to5Google reported. [5] That update targets the camera, and the bug here was audio only. [4] Privacy advocates had already raised concerns about the glasses' inconspicuous look, Ars Technica reported. [7]
In our view the stored log is where the liability sits, because it is a record of a conversation the wearer did not start. Anyone who allows these glasses on site, or ships a wearable with a wake-word assistant, can sort each device on two questions: whether capture can start without an explicit act by the wearer, and whether the capture is kept as a transcript in an account. If a device can misfire but keeps nothing, it is a nuisance; if it keeps transcripts only after an explicit act, it is a retention-policy question.
Where both are true, as in this report, we would test before rollout. Leave a pair on a desk with the setting off for a day, then read the conversation history. The test costs a spare pair and an hour of someone's time, and a clean result shows only that this pair stayed quiet that day.
What to watch
- Whether Meta answers Ars Technica on how many devices were affected and what it will do to prevent a repeat.
- Whether Meta confirms or rules out the firmware update a Reddit user pointed to as the point the behavior began.
- Whether users report unprompted recordings again after Meta's fix.

Ars Technica sent Meta a message asking what it is doing to prevent future bugs like this and how many devices were affected, and said it would update the article if it hears back.

Before the bug reports, privacy advocates had already expressed widespread concerns about Meta's smart glasses, including their inconspicuous look and how easy it could be to secretly record another person.

Reddit user Kindly-Audience-137 said the recording happened across three Meta Ray-Bans and that they had the 'Respond without Hey Meta' setting turned off.

It is not known how many Meta smart glasses were affected; there are a few reports online, and Android Authority said it was unable to replicate the problem before Meta said it fixed it.
