Apple's $149 HomePod Mini 2 ships October 30 without the Siri AI its S10 chip can run

Apple will ship the $149 HomePod Mini 2 on October 30 with Siri AI to follow in a later software update. The price is $20 above the model it replaces, and no launch report dates the update, so buyers must judge $149 without a ship day for the AI.

What happened

  • The S10 chip first appeared in the Apple Watch Series 10 in 2024, and The Verge calls it the biggest upgrade inside the Mini 2.
  • According to 9to5Mac, the original HomePod mini launched at $99 in November 2020, and Apple raised it to $129 earlier this year.
  • The Mini 2 adds Sound Glow lights synced to album art, use as a Mac's default speaker, and surround pairing with the new Apple TV 4K.
  • Siri AI will be offered in English in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and India.

Why it matters

  • constraint Anyone with a current Mini who wants Siri AI on a speaker has one route, buying the Mini 2, because Apple confirmed the old model is excluded.
  • contradiction The Verge says an iPhone 15 Pro or newer is needed to enable the upgrade, while 9to5Mac and MacRumors say an Apple Intelligence iPhone or iPad works, so the entry requirement is unsettled.
  • exposure The Verge says personal context, which covers calendar and messages, relies on voice recognition for privacy, and anyone in the home can talk to the speaker.

A shopper who reads only MacRumors' headline sees "Apple Announces $149 HomePod Mini 2 With Siri AI, 'Sound Glow', and Four-Speaker Surround Sound" [4]. The article under it says Siri AI "will be available in a future software update" [10]. The Verge leads with the same fact in the other order: the new chip "can power Siri AI", but the AI features are not available at launch [5].

The description 9to5Mac reproduces is in the present tense. Siri AI "transforms the HomePod mini experience and helps users get more done than ever before" [6].

The $20 increase is 15.5 percent on the $129 predecessor [14]. Against the $99 launch price, the Mini 2 costs $50 more, about 51 percent [15]. That is two increases [9][1] on a speaker whose sound Apple describes as unchanged [3].

None of the three reports dates the Siri AI update or says what the extra $20 pays for [11]. The chip is the obvious candidate, and crediting it is our inference. The reports present the audio features as features of the speaker and mark only Siri AI as a later update [12].

We'd buy the Mini 2 at $149 only when the audio features justify it on their own, because they are the part of the purchase with a delivery date [12][1]. The tradeoff is that a buyer who counts on Siri AI to make the price fair has nothing to check that against until Apple names a date [11].

Two conditions sort the decision. One is whether the audio features are worth $149 with no AI. The other is whether you own a device that supports Apple Intelligence and live in one of the listed English-language markets [16][17].

- Audio worth it, supported device and market: buy. Siri AI is a bonus when it arrives. - Audio worth it, no supported device or market: buy for the audio and treat the AI as absent, since it needs both [17][16]. - Audio not worth it, supported device and market: the purchase is entirely for the AI, and it has no date [11]. Hold the order. The cost is the October 30 delivery [1]. - Audio not worth it, no supported device or market: skip it.

What to watch

  • Apple's release notes for HomePod software 27.2, the version 9to5Mac says the Mini 2 will run [c18], for whether Siri AI is in it or in a later number.
  • A published date for the Siri AI update; until one exists, the $149 price carries a timing risk for anyone buying for the AI.
  • Whether Apple confirms the iPhone-only gate The Verge reports or the iPhone-or-iPad pairing that 9to5Mac and MacRumors describe.
