Beats' Pokémon Pill speaker costs the same $149.99 as the regular model
Beats will sell a Pokémon edition of its Pill speaker from October 15 at $149.99, the same price as other Pill variants. Beyond the artwork and charms, the speaker is the standard model, so the design carries the sale.
The Product Desk

What happened
- The collaboration is with The Pokémon Company International, and the speaker carries Pikachu and Mimikyu on its grill.
- It is the first Beats Pill to ship with charms: a Poké Ball, the Beats "b" logo and Pikachu lightning bolts.
- The specifications match other Pill models, including up to 24 hours of battery life, IP67 resistance and lossless audio over USB-C.
- Sales are limited to the US, UK and China, through Apple's website, Target, Argos and Douyin.
Why it matters
- cost At a flat list price, Beats cannot recover the extra charms and custom packaging from the buyer, and the coverage does not disclose what the Pokémon partnership cost.
- constraint A fan outside the US, UK and China has no listed retailer for the edition.
- precedent Gizmodo counts Beats as the third gadget maker with a Pokémon edition after Polaroid and Fitbit, and we'd expect more themed versions of mature hardware.
- decision A flat-price themed edition removes the premium debate, so success has to be judged on buyers added rather than units moved from the standard model.
Put the Pokémon Pill next to any other Pill on October 15 and the price tag matches [1]. Gizmodo's writer wrote that the speaker "doesn't cost a premium over the regular Beats Pill," and gave that as part of its pull [16].
Beats describes the collaboration in terms of energy. It says the edition is "here to unleash the energy of your music, inspired by the power of Pikachu's brightest spark and the depths of Mimikyu's mystery" [11]. What ships is a different grill, a gray body, a set of charms and a custom box [4][9]. Gizmodo says that apart from the makeover the Pill is identical to the regular model [8].
The speaker under the artwork dates to 2024, when Beats revamped the Pill with better Apple integration and USB-C [6]. Gizmodo called it a "two-year-old portable Bluetooth speaker" [15].
Beats also says who the edition is for. "Pokémon Trainers are some of the most passionate in the world, and we saw an opportunity to channel that energy into something fun, unexpected, and created especially for fans," said Chris Thorne, Beats CMO [12]. That sentence is Beats' theory of the buyer. No sales figure or unit count appeared in the coverage, though Dexerto calls the speaker "limited-edition" [7]. The one buyer reaction on record is a single writer's.
For anyone weighing a themed edition of their own product, sort it on two questions: does the edition change the price, and does it change what the product does. The Pokémon Pill sits where neither changes. Only the art and the accessories are new.
We think that is the safer place to test a licensed design, because nobody has to defend a premium on the day it ships. The tradeoff is that price stops telling you anything about demand. You have to count buyers who would not have bought the standard version, and you have to get that count from your own checkout data. At an identical price, units that simply move from the standard model to the themed one add nothing to revenue.
What to watch
- Whether Beats or its retailers disclose a unit count or sell-through for the Pokémon edition.
- Whether Beats offers charms with standard Pill colors or leaves them exclusive to this edition.
- Whether the edition reaches markets beyond the US, UK and China.
