Apple TV 4K costs $149.01 more than Google's TV Streamer before anyone has tested it
Apple will sell its fourth-generation Apple TV 4K for $299 from Nov. 13, $149.01 more than Google's $149.99 TV Streamer. TechRepublic's comparison puts the burden on the A19 chip, Siri AI microphones and HomePod surround support to justify that premium.
The Product Desk

Apple's fourth-generation Apple TV 4K costs $299 in the US. Google TV Streamer costs $149.99 now, after a 2026 price increase from $99.99 at its September 2024 launch.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV 4K (4th generation), US price | $299 | 1 | |
| Google TV Streamer, now | $149.99 | 2 | |
| Google's 2024 launch price | $99.99 | 4 |
What happened
- Google launched the TV Streamer at $99.99 in September 2024 and raised it to $149.99 in 2026, according to its current store listing.
- Apple says the A19 chip's CPU is up to 50% faster than the previous generation's, and its GPU twice as fast.
- The new box has three far-field microphones for hands-free Siri AI.
- Apple preorders opened Oct. 13, and Google's streamer is available now.
Why it matters
- cost Four-speaker HomePod surround needs four speakers, so a household without them adds that spend on top of the $299.
- constraint Until Apple publishes RAM, storage and wireless details, a buyer cannot set the two boxes' memory, storage and wireless specs side by side.
- decision Anyone who preorders before Nov. 13 is buying on Apple's own speed figures, because independent tests cannot start until the box ships.
Take a household that mostly opens streaming apps and has little interest in Apple's smart-home features. TechRepublic, whose comparison supplies most of the figures here, says the price difference may be difficult to justify for that household [19]. Google's streamer already supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, along with Dolby Atmos [9]. A faster processor does not automatically produce better picture quality when both devices play the same supported format, TechRepublic adds [17].
Google's own pricing changed the comparison. Measured against Google's launch price, the gap would be $199.01 [15]. The 2026 increase took $50 off it [16], leaving $149.01 [14].
Google's box has a track record. In September 2024 The Verge found it faster than older Chromecast hardware but less responsive than some premium streaming competitors, and TechRepublic notes those results reflect the hardware and software available at the time [12]. Apple's A19 has no such record yet [7]. It does include a dedicated AV1 decoder [6], and TechRepublic says the extra power could improve navigation, app performance and gaming, particularly for Apple Arcade users [18].
On the Google side, the box offers Gemini for TV and Matter and Thread connectivity [13]. Apple's answer is Siri AI and four-speaker HomePod surround [11].
We'd settle it with a count. Before ordering, list the Apple-specific features that someone in the house will use in the first month: hands-free Siri AI, four-speaker HomePod surround, games on Apple Arcade [18]. If the list is empty, we'd buy the $149.99 Google box [2], since the extra $149.01 would then pay for A19 gains that nobody has measured against it [7]. If the list has an entry, the premium has a use, and the A19 numbers are something to confirm once reviews land.
The tradeoff runs both ways. Google's box was less responsive than some premium rivals in The Verge's 2024 test [12], and Apple's cannot be independently tested until it ships [7].
What to watch
- Independent reviews after the Nov. 13 ship date that time navigation and app launches on the Apple TV 4K against Google's TV Streamer.
- Apple publishing a full spec sheet that confirms RAM, storage and wireless networking.
- Whether Google moves the TV Streamer's $149.99 price again, since its last change was a $50 rise.
