Apple's own code points to a new iPad mini, HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K before year-end

Picture the person who signs off on tablets for a field team, with a batch of iPad minis sitting in a purchase cart this week. The leak gives that person one firm input and one soft one. The firm input is hardware, shown in images and model names that MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris found in Apple's own code ^[2]. The soft input is the date.

All three reports trace to Perris. The Verge and 9to5Mac both credit him ^[2][3], and MacRumors, where he contributes, ran the findings as its own leaks ^[13]. The three outlets are reporting one finding by one person. According to 9to5Mac, no other details about the products came out of the code ^[5].

October comes from Apple's habits. MacRumors wrote that "October is a common month for Apple to announce products" and that the devices "might be no more than a few weeks away" ^[4]. The Verge said only that more hardware is expected before the end of the year ^[1]. Teams tend to read a find in Apple's code as a schedule. What the code shows is that the products exist in Apple's software in some form, and Apple has not announced them ^[1].

The iPad mini is where the leak changes a purchase. The seventh-generation model launched two years ago with an A17 Pro, and the iPad mini 8 moves to the A20 Pro from the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and iPhone Duo ^[6]. If an iPad mini order can slip into November, I'd let it slip. The cost is a few more weeks on current devices and the risk that October passes without a launch, because the timing rests on habit ^[4].

For app teams, the camera matters more than the chip. The leaked front images put the FaceTime camera on the landscape edge, with a groove at the top of the display that appears to indicate an added speaker ^[7]. An app that frames video or places controls around the old camera position will look different on this device. That change is visible in Apple's own images.

The OLED display and the vibration-based speaker for better waterproofing are another matter. Both come from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, who reported the next iPad could include them ^[8]. The MacRumors list of iPad details from the code covers the chip, a new speaker design and the camera, and does not include OLED or waterproofing ^[13].

The Apple TV and HomePod mini give buyers less to act on. The current Apple TV is nearly four years old ^[11], and the image of the "Apple TV 4K (4th generation)" appears to keep the same outside ^[10]. Its chip upgrades come from earlier reporting: a possible A17 Pro from Perris, and Apple's N1 wireless chip according to Gurman in 2024 ^[12]. The HomePod mini 2 keeps the design of the late-2020 original and swaps the orange and yellow for more subdued green, pink, blue, white and black ^[9].

Sort each detail on two tests: whether it appears in Apple's code or only in someone's reporting, and whether it changes what you build or only what you buy. Code-and-build holds one item, the landscape camera, and it is the only detail that justifies test time before launch ^[7]. Code-and-buy holds the A20 Pro, the HomePod colors and the Apple TV's unchanged case ^[13][9][10]. That cell justifies holding a non-urgent iPad mini order for a few weeks. The reporting row, which holds OLED, waterproofing and the Apple TV chips, justifies no spending or engineering time until Apple publishes specs ^[8][12].
