Apple's base MacBook Pro reportedly gets the new design about six months after the high end
Apple will bring its new MacBook Pro design to the M7 base model in spring 2027, about six months after the high end, Bloomberg reported. For teams planning 2027 laptop refreshes, that makes holding base-model orders until spring a real option.
The Product Desk
What happened
- Past MacBook Pro redesigns took years to reach the base model: two years after the 2021 redesign and three years after the 2016 one.
- The redesigned high-end models are expected to ship with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips because Apple dropped its high-end M6 chips to speed up M7.
- The new design is expected to bring a slightly thinner chassis and OLED displays with touch support, possibly with a Dynamic Island.
- The entry-level MacBook Pro costs $1,999 today, which 9to5mac says is what Pro-chip versions cost just under a year ago, and it blames the memory shortage.
Why it matters
- exposure A refresh calendar pinned to spring 2027 depends on Bloomberg's reporting and a date the report itself hedges as 'as early as' the first half; a slip keeps aging laptops in service longer.
- cost Waiting means budgeting for an unpriced machine at a tier that memory costs have already pushed up once.
- precedent If K104 ships on schedule, base-model buyers can stop assuming a redesign takes years to reach their tier, and refresh plans would have to track Apple's high-end launches instead.
A team that orders base 14-inch MacBook Pros this fall will, on Bloomberg's reporting, get an M6 laptop in the current chassis. It launches alongside high-end models that already have the new one [8]. In spring 2027 the same tier is expected to get an M7 chip and the redesign [1][2]. For roughly six months, the newest base model on sale would be the outgoing design [14].
The Bloomberg report, as quoted by 9to5mac, says Apple "is also preparing a revamped entry-level MacBook Pro, code-named K104, for as early as the first half of next year" [6]. It continues: "The 14-inch laptop will adopt a new design in line with what Apple is preparing for higher-end MacBooks with touch screens due between the end of this year and early next year" [7].
Both dates are approximate. "As early as" is the report's own hedge [6]. The high-end window also runs into early 2027, so the roughly six-month gap 9to5mac describes could narrow, or the base model could land after spring [3][7]. The timeline comes from Bloomberg's reporting, relayed by 9to5mac [1].
The chip lineup is lopsided too. With the high end on M5-generation chips, a spring M7 base model would carry the newest chip in the MacBook Pro range until the M7 Pro and M7 Max refresh expected in fall 2027 [15]. In our view, the parts a user deals with every working day are the screen and the body. The spring model is expected to get the new ones along with the newer chip [11].
The report does not include a price for the M7 model. 9to5mac expects the redesigned 14-inch with M5 Pro to cost more than $2,500 [16]. Its writer said that buyers wanting "something more in budget with the M7 chip and the redesign" will "only have to wait until the following spring" [17].
We think teams with a scheduled 2027 refresh should hold base-model orders for the spring machine. The tradeoff is exposure to a slipped date and to whatever Apple charges for it. Two tests sort the rest: whether the laptops being replaced can last through the first half of 2027, and whether users need the new touch OLED screen or only more compute. A laptop that has to go now and only needs compute points to the M6 base model, old chassis accepted [8]. One that has to go now and needs the new screen points to the high-end models and their higher price [16]. Where the old machines can last, both cells point the same way: wait, and get the newer chip and the new chassis at the entry tier [15].
What to watch
- Whether Apple's fall launch matches the report: an M6 base model in the current chassis beside redesigned M5 Pro and M5 Max models.
- The price Apple sets on the redesigned high-end 14-inch, against 9to5mac's estimate of more than $2,500.
- Any further Bloomberg reporting that firms up K104's date or moves it out of 'as early as the first half' of 2027.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported earlier this year that Apple has a new M7-powered entry-level MacBook Pro in the pipeline for spring 2027.

The M7 entry-level MacBook Pro will bring the upcoming redesign down to the entry level, something that previously was not expected.

There will be only a roughly six-month gap before the redesign comes to the entry level after it debuts in the high-end MacBook Pros, rumored to be called MacBook Ultra.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Pro and M1 Max was introduced in 2021, but the base model MacBook Pro kept the 13-inch design until 2023, when it gained the 14-inch chassis with the M3 chip.

When Apple redesigned the MacBook Pro in 2016, the entry-level model did not gain the Touch Bar until 2019.

Another entry-level MacBook Pro with the current design and the M6 chip is on track to debut this fall alongside the redesigned high-end MacBook Pros.

The redesigned high-end MacBook Pros are expected to debut with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips instead of M6-generation chips, after Apple decided to abandon plans for high-end M6 chips to accelerate M7.

A high-end MacBook Pro refresh with M7 Pro and M7 Max is expected in fall 2027.

The redesign is expected to feature a slightly thinner chassis, OLED displays with touch support, and possibly a Dynamic Island.

The entry-level MacBook Pro is $1,999 today, which is what the Pro chip versions cost just under a year ago; 9to5mac attributes this to the memory shortage and recent price hikes.

The base MacBook Pro waited two years to get the 2021 redesign's chassis and three years to get the 2016 redesign's Touch Bar.

The M6 base model in the old design would be the newest entry-level MacBook Pro for roughly six months, from its fall 2026 launch to the M7 redesign in spring 2027.

From the M7 base model's spring 2027 launch until the M7 Pro and M7 Max refresh in fall 2027, the base model would carry a newer chip generation (M7) than the redesigned high-end models (M5 Pro and M5 Max).

9to5mac's writer expects the redesigned 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro will likely cost over $2,500.
