Two Aedes species and a night-biting Culex tracked different chemistry on the same panel of people, so a repellent aimed at one cue is unlikely to protect equally well against all three disease vectors.

The apparatus measured curiosity, not bites. For each volunteer, or each worn sleeve, the measured quantity was how many mosquitoes entered the device to investigate [8], with the Aedes rig built so the insects could smell an arm they could not reach [6]. That isolates odor cleanly. It also means the endpoint is short-range orientation rather than a blood meal, so the ranking describes who draws attention, not who ends up covered in welts.
The chemistry results rest on a narrower base than the preference ordering. The preference ordering comes from 119 people [3], but the chemistry was read off the small groups at each extreme of attraction for each species [9], which puts the named compounds and bacteria on a narrower base than the ordering itself [3]. Science News describes those groups only as small, without giving their size [9].
There is also an asymmetry in the stimulus. Two of the three species were offered a living arm and the third was offered cloth [1]: Culex quinquefasciatus, which feeds at night, was tested against a nylon sleeve worn for several hours and then presented in the dark [7]. Mosquitoes navigate by visual, thermal and scent cues [15], so an arm and a sleeve are not interchangeable objects. Within a species, the comparison across volunteers holds; across species, the magnitudes should not be set side by side.
The two mechanisms behind these preferences are not the same. Two species leaned toward low total emission [10] and the third toward particular plant-smelling molecules [11], which are different sensory quantities: one is about how much, the other about which. A masking product that lowered a person's overall output could plausibly move them toward the group two of these species prefer. Alicia Showering of BugBiome, who was not part of the work, reads the divergence as separate evolutionary solutions to host-finding, shaped by which hosts a species feeds on and when it hunts [18].
Three bacterial taxa turned up in the high-attraction group for every species [12], a correlation across people rather than proof of cause. Nobody added or subtracted a taxon on a volunteer and re-ran the assay. Kaylee Marrero says the group's next step is working out how skin bacteria make these odors [20], which is the experiment that would license the repellent and trap-lure ambitions DeGennaro sketches [19].
The effect size is not given: Aedes aegypti's preference for male volunteers is reported as slight but meaningful [13], with no effect size attached. And Maria Elena De Obaldia of Regeneron, who has studied human attraction in mosquitoes and was not involved here, notes that human scent runs to more than a thousand chemicals, many of them bacterial products [14], complex enough that whole classes of compounds may have gone unmeasured [16]. Regeneron is a major financial supporter of the Society for Science, which publishes Science News [17].

Researchers report July 30 in iScience that certain mosquito species are attracted to, or repelled by, different subsets of people depending on components of their body chemistry and skin microbiome.
Matthew DeGennaro, a neurogeneticist at Florida International University in Miami, says the aim is to understand people's risk of being bitten because all of the mosquitoes studied are vectors of disease.
The team recruited 119 volunteers and exposed three mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, Aedes albopictus and Culex quinquefasciatus, to each person's scent.
Each mosquito species preferred a different group of volunteers.
Some people had more than one mosquito species find them particularly attractive, but no one strongly attracted all three species.
For the day-feeding Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, volunteers placed an arm inside a device designed to let the mosquitoes smell them but not bite.

Peer-reviewed panel, single telling
The core result rests on a July 30 iScience paper with a real human panel — 119 volunteers, three vectors, a defined behavioural read-out — and Science News brings in two outside researchers, one of whom names a genuine limit. What holds the number down is everything left off the page: the subgroup sizes behind the chemical and bacterial associations, any statistics behind a 'slight but meaningful' sex preference, and the fact that Culex met a worn sleeve while the Aedes species met a living arm.
Nothing built yet to count
There is no repellent, lure, trial or product here to measure uptake against. The only forward motion Science News reports is a planned follow-up study on how skin bacteria generate odour, and intent is not adoption.
Careful body, hopeful edges
The reporting is unusually well-behaved for a 'why mosquitoes bite you' story — hedged headline, named limitation, no promise that you can now predict your own bites. The overstatement is small and lives at the ends: a lab aspiration for commercial repellents and microbe-based trap lures sits beside findings drawn from a handful of people at each extreme of one panel, and the arm-versus-sleeve difference passes without comment.
Repellent money, half-labelled
Two of the three interested parties are visible if you read closely. The lab itself points at commercial repellents as the payoff; the outside expert who supplies the evolutionary interpretation runs a company that makes insecticides from microbes, which is the adjacent business this work would feed; and the expert who supplies the caveat works for Regeneron, a major funder of the Society for Science, which publishes Science News. Only the last of those is flagged as a relationship — the first is presented as motivation, the second as a job title.
Result solid, mechanism open
We would bet on the headline shape — three species, three different favourite groups, no universal magnet — because it is a clean behavioural comparison and the surprising direction (less odour, more attraction) is not the direction a promotional story would invent. We would not yet bet on any named compound or bacterium as the cause, nor on how any of it behaves outside a smell chamber, and with one outlet carrying the whole story there is no second reading of the paper to lean on.
