iOS 27 arrives Monday, but 25GB of free space is needed to download it

Apple's September 14 release reaches every iPhone that runs iOS 26, so what sorts one user from another is whether the phone has 25GB free and how long it has been sitting on iOS 26.6. Both are checkable.

What happened

  • Apple will release iOS 27 to the general public on Monday, September 14, with T3 expecting the download to appear around 6pm BST.
  • The release supports every iPhone that can run iOS 26, a list of 33 models on Mashable's count, starting at the second-generation iPhone SE and ending at the unreleased iPhone Duo.
  • Existing phones get the software four days before the iPhone 18 Pro reaches shops on September 18 with iOS 27 already installed.

Why it matters

  • constraint The gate on Monday is free storage, so the shape of the rollout is set by users with full phones, and the work of clearing 25GB falls on them or on whoever talks them through it.
  • cost The head start on reindexing had to be taken before Monday. Devices that jump straight from an older build will feel slow for days, and the ticket will say iOS 27 broke the phone.
  • exposure Users whose devices are set to French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese or Spanish get the operating system on the 14th without the assistant it was built around. Their support teams answer for the gap until October.
  • contradiction Mashable presents the date as news from Wednesday's event, while T3 says Apple never mentioned it on stage and it surfaced in a footnote to the iPhone 18 Pro press release.

Fast Company puts the install requirement at 25GB of free space or more depending on the model, and says the download will not start without it [5][22]. Its suggestion for finding that space is to delete video games and offline 4K video from apps like Netflix and Disney+ [23].

The second thing that sorts users is indexing. iOS categorizes and tags files so search can find them later, and a major version normally reindexes the whole phone, which can take days and drains processing power and battery while it runs [7]. Fast Company attributes the recurring social-media claims that a new iOS "slows down" older iPhones to that process [10]. iOS 27 has a new Spotlight architecture behind Siri AI, so the reindex may take longer than usual [8]. Apple's answer shipped in iOS 26.6: a background feature, first reported by 9to5Mac, that starts the reindex before iOS 27 is installed, and Fast Company says a few days on 26.6 should make the upgrade go more smoothly [6][9].

Fast Company's other piece of preparation is aimed at app teams as much as users: update apps first, because developers commonly ship their optimizations for a new iOS before the release lands [27].

The feature people will ask about has the narrowest availability. According to T3, Siri AI arrives on the 14th in beta on English-language devices only, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish following from October [11]. The earliest that can mean is October 1, which is 17 days after release [19]. T3 quotes Apple describing Apple Intelligence availability as being for "users with an Apple Intelligence-enabled device set to a supported language" [12]. The new Siri is powered by Google Gemini, Mashable reports [20].

None of the three reports includes an adoption or install-base figure [26], so an expectation of near-universal installs within weeks rests on the compatibility list.

Two questions sort an install base for Monday, and both are answerable from data a team already holds. Does the device have 25GB free, and has it been running iOS 26.6 for several days? A device with both upgrades quietly. A device with space but no head start on indexing will feel slow for a while and produce a ticket that blames iOS 27. A device with the head start but no space stalls before the download and needs someone to walk a user through deleting a game. A device with neither generates both calls in the same week.

What to watch

  • Whether iPadOS 27 ships on the same Monday; T3 says it is likely but unconfirmed, and macOS has been staggered before.
  • Whether the October rollout of Siri AI in French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish holds to October.
  • Whether Apple publishes per-model free-space requirements, or leaves users to discover the 25GB figure at the download screen.
