Gemini Spark makes the durable job queue a checkbox in someone else's app

"Days or weeks" is the specification worth reading twice ^[1]. A job that lives that long has to keep goal state somewhere durable, wake on a schedule, survive a locked phone, and resume on a machine other than the one it started on ^[1][2][3]. That is the scaffolding a team otherwise assembles itself around model calls: a queue, a store, a retry policy, somewhere for the run to sit while nobody is watching. Google is now shipping it as a mode inside a subscription app ^[16].

What is missing is the part an operator would need before putting anything real through it. The reports carry no universal list of supported actions, no integrations list and no task limits ^[6], and no price for the tier that gates access ^[9]. You cannot design a review step for a process whose failure modes are undocumented, and you cannot size the blast radius of a run you cannot enumerate. The two accounts do not even agree on reachability: one says Spark is available now to Google AI Ultra subscribers aged 18 and over in the United States ^[16], the other says it starts with trusted testers before a beta for Ultra subscribers ^[17]. Those cannot both describe the same week ^[18].

The routing claim deserves the same scepticism. Google's own copy says you should not have to guess whether a task needs Spark, a Daily Brief or an inbox search ^[7], and in the voice flow it does hand the job off: ask for event invites to become calendar entries with driving times, and Gemini passes it to Spark to finish in the background ^[10]. Outside that flow, mezha.net, citing TechCrunch, notes the Gemini app keeps chat, Spark and Daily Brief as separate sections with their own icons and navigation slots ^[12]. So the promise holds inside Live and the app contradicts it everywhere else. Anthropic's Claude splits Chat and Cowork, and ChatGPT splits Chat and Work ^[13], which suggests the branded-mode habit is not Google's alone.

Then there is where the human sits. Gemini Live can search, summarise, star, archive and delete mail hands-free ^[8], and Spark writes into Docs, Sheets and Drive while retaining the goal ^[5]. Pair that with execution that continues after the app closes or the device locks ^[2], and review stops being something that happens before the action. It happens after, if there is a record to review. Google is also clear that further skills, automated workflows and third-party connections are roadmap ^[14], so the surface will widen before the accounting for it does.

Voice is the setup path, and Google says 63% of users already talk to Gemini out loud ^[11]. Spoken task definition is fast and loose in the same breath. A conversational brain dump is a fine way to start an outline ^[5]; it is a poor contract for a job that will run for a fortnight without you.
