Google converts every Gem into a slash-command skill starting November 17
Google will automatically convert Gemini Gems into skills from November 17 for personal accounts, with Workspace businesses following in March 2027. Anyone who shares Gems with colleagues needs a re-sharing plan timed to their own account's date.

What happened
- Education customers on Google Workspace keep Gems until June 2027, the last date on Google's migration schedule.
- Link sharing and attaching Google Drive files or notebooks for context, both features of Gems, reach skills only over the coming weeks.
- Gems launched in August 2024 as Google's answer to custom GPTs and have always been free to anyone with a Google account.

Why it matters
- contradiction Digital Trends says skills need a $19.99 Pro or $99.99 Ultra plan plus Spark, while 9to5Google says free users without Spark get them, so the cost of November for a free personal account is still unsettled.
- constraint A team split across personal and Workspace accounts will run Gems and skills side by side for roughly four months, with two copies of the same instructions to keep in step.
- decision Owners of shared personal Gems have to choose between rebuilding access by hand after conversion and waiting for skills to get link sharing, a feature promised only for the coming weeks.
Picture whoever built a team's writing-style Gem and sent the link around. When it changes, the questions go to them. Matching writing styles is one of the example skills Google uses to introduce the format [3]. On a personal account, that Gem becomes a skill on November 17 and keeps working as a Gem until then [6][12]. Google confirmed the change on September 27 [10], 51 days before the conversion [4].
Digital Trends described the pitch: skills lean into Gemini being proactive, recognizing what a task needs before it is told [17]. What users will actually do is type. They enter a slash, then an @, and Gemini either picks the right skill or lets them stack several in one chat [13]. Users no longer have to open the Gem manager to launch a saved assistant [2].
Sharing is the hard part for whoever owns the shared Gems. According to 9to5Google, skills reach parity with Gems "over the coming weeks," and the missing pieces include sharing by link and adding Google Drive files or notebooks for context [4]. Skills began rolling out to Gemini chat users globally, and other customers get access in the coming weeks [9]. Neither report says whether a Gem's existing share link survives the conversion. A Gem built around an attached Drive file and handed to colleagues is the one at risk if parity lands after November 17.
The two reports also disagree on who gets skills at all. Digital Trends said skills require Google AI Pro at $19.99 a month or Ultra at $99.99, plus access to Gemini Spark [14]. It listed further limits: users must be over 18, on a personal account and outside the EU, UK, Switzerland and Nigeria [15]. It added that Google had not said whether the paywall is permanent [16]. 9to5Google wrote after Google fully detailed the migration [18]. It reported that the feature will be available to all free users who don't have Spark [5]. Skills debuted in the Spark agent before reaching chat [1], and the paid list may describe that version. If the Digital Trends account applies to chat, a free user who wants to keep using converted Gems pays $239.88 a year for Pro [2].
On personal accounts, Gems will have lasted about 27 months [3]. Work accounts keep them longer. The gap between the November 17 conversion and a March 2027 Workspace migration is 104 to 134 days, depending on where in March it falls [1][7].
Sort each Gem by two questions: which account owns it, and whether anyone else relies on it through a link or an attached Drive file. A shared Gem on a personal account has the tightest window. It converts on November 17 [12], and the features it depends on are still due in the coming weeks [4]. I'd advise its owner to keep a copy of the instruction text outside Gemini and to test the skill with one recipient once link sharing appears. The tradeoff is a second round of setup if Google's conversion turns out to carry everything across. A solo Gem on a personal account converts on its own [12], and the open question there is price [5][14]. A shared Gem on a Workspace business account has until March 2027 [7], months after parity is due [4], so its owner can test against a finished feature. A solo Gem on a Workspace or education account needs no work before 2027 [7][8].
What to watch
- Google's own help documentation stating whether skills in Gemini chat are free or require AI Pro, Ultra and Spark access.
- Whether link sharing and Drive context reach skills before November 17, and whether existing Gem share links keep working after conversion.
- Whether the availability limits Digital Trends listed for the EU, UK, Switzerland and Nigeria still apply when personal Gems convert.
