OpenAI puts shared team documents inside ChatGPT with Space and Pages

OpenAI opened ChatGPT Space and Pages to Pro, Business and Enterprise users at DevDay, with shared slides due within weeks. Slides export to PowerPoint and Google, so teams can work with ChatGPT's agents there and keep finished files where they already live.

What happened

  • Pages and the coming slides draw on ChatGPT for on-page research, graphics and images, and OpenAI says both are built for people and agents to work on together.
  • Several people and agents will be able to edit the same slides at once, designing them by conversation or starting from a team's own templates.
  • Space runs on the desktop app and the web, and OpenAI says mobile access is on the way without giving a date.
  • OpenAI also announced Private Intelligence, a data access approval layer pitched at enterprise customers worried about exposing sensitive content.

Why it matters

  • decision Teams have to choose whether a finished deck lives in ChatGPT or in PowerPoint and Google, and the export path lets them delay that choice until slides ship and show whether formatting survives.
  • exposure Tagging a Dot into shared pages hands company content to an agent now, while OpenAI's confidential-computing option arrives only as a preview this fall.
  • contradiction ZDNET frames the launch as a move on Google Workspace while Sam Altman presented it as a new system, so buyers are left to set the product's scope for themselves.

In OpenAI's demo at its fourth annual DevDay [1], a staffer tagged her Dot agent in a comment on a Page, assigned it a coworker's feedback and kept iterating on the project, all in one place [9]. ZDNET said the Page looked like a Notion landing page [9]. "Space is built for people and AI to work on the same content together," an OpenAI representative told ZDNET by email [14].

The product as shipped expects the finished file to leave. Slides can be presented from ChatGPT or exported to PowerPoint or Google, and ZDNET's reviewer qualified the claim that formatting survives with the word "allegedly" [7]. For whoever rolls this out, the first test is to push the company template through that export and open the result where the approver works.

ZDNET wrote that the announcements seem to confirm a long-held suspicion that OpenAI is coming for Google Workspace [11]. By ZDNET's account, OpenAI is hesitant to fully claim any productivity-suite plans [15]. Anthropic made a similar move: Claude Docs is part of a Claude Cowork consolidation that also absorbed Claude Design and Slides [16]. With export built in, Space can sit beside the files a team already keeps in Google and PowerPoint [7].

The harder question is what happens to company data once an agent edits shared work. OpenAI said Zero Data Retention with Private Safety Processing "enables automated safety reviews without giving OpenAI personnel access to the underlying content" [17]. ZDNET's report does not say whether Space changes plan prices or what admins can see and switch off.

Sort the decision on two axes: where the finished file has to live (ChatGPT, or the suite the company already uses) and who edits it (people only, or people plus a Dot).

- Existing suite, people only: Pages is a drafting pad, judged on whether exports hold up with your templates. - Existing suite, people plus Dots: the workflow from the demo, plus a hand-off at the end. Decks can be judged once slides ship [5]. - ChatGPT, people only: a new editor with no agent benefit. It is the weakest case. - ChatGPT, people plus Dots: the full pitch, and the box where unanswered data and admin questions cost the most.

I'd start a team in the second box. The cost is two copies of every document, one the agent works on and one the team signs off, and someone has to own keeping them in step.

What to watch

  • Whether collaborative slides ship in the promised few weeks, and whether exported decks keep their formatting when opened in PowerPoint and Google.
  • What the Private Inference preview includes when it arrives this fall, and how it differs from Private Intelligence.
  • Whether OpenAI publishes admin controls or pricing for Space on Business and Enterprise plans.
