TSMC heads into October 15 with net margin forecast near 50% and a $60-64 billion 2026 capex budget set
TSMC is forecast to report a record NT$746.3 billion third-quarter profit on October 15, up about 65% on the year. Revenue is already out, so the margin outlook and any change to the capex budget are the new information.
The Investor · Invest desk

TSMC spent $40.54 billion on capex in 2025. In July it raised its 2026 budget to $60 billion to $64 billion, from $52 billion to $56 billion. Second-quarter net margin was 55.62%, lifted by a one-off NT$63.20 billion gain; a Yahoo Finance preview sees around 50% in the third quarter.

What happened
- TSMC's third-quarter revenue, reported October 8 at about NT$1.49 trillion, beat the NT$1.46 trillion analyst estimate and the top of the company's own July guidance.
- A Yahoo Finance preview puts third-quarter net margin near 50%, down from 55.62% in the second quarter.
- In July TSMC raised its 2026 capital spending budget to $60 billion to $64 billion from a previous range of $52 billion to $56 billion.
- TSMC has said the move to 2nm production could cut second-half gross margin by 3 to 4 percentage points, with low early yields and high depreciation.
- TSMC is putting $265 billion into Arizona factories, including an extra $100 billion announced in July.
Why it matters
- exposure Cryptopolitan says investors may need more than a beat to push the shares higher, with the fourth-quarter margin outlook possibly weighing more than the profit. The stock is up 63% in Taipei this year against 69% for the market.
- cost Capex shows up in margin through depreciation, and TSMC itself ties early 2nm output to high depreciation costs. We'd expect any budget above $64 billion to be paid for by shareholders in the margin outlook that arrives with it.
- contradiction The account says TSMC has already raised full-year growth guidance to slightly more than 40%, yet cites Morgan Stanley's Charlie Chan as expecting a raise to the low-to-mid 40% range. It does not date the raise, so how much revenue guidance is left to change on October 15 is unclear.
The 50% margin estimate can be checked against the other two numbers in the preview. A profit forecast of NT$746.3 billion [1] on revenue of about NT$1.49 trillion [4] divides to a net margin of 50.1% [17]. The second quarter had a one-off in it: a NT$63.20 billion gain on the sale of an 8.1% stake in Vanguard International Semiconductor, which Cryptopolitan says is unlikely to recur [7].
Against last year the squeeze disappears. Profit up about 65% [2] and revenue up 50% [4] put the year-ago quarter at roughly NT$452 billion of profit [18] on NT$993 billion of revenue [19], a net margin near 45.5% [20]. The forecast sits about 4.6 points above that [21] (the inputs are rounded, so the gap is approximate).
We think profit will not decide how the shares or the sector read this report. The forecast clears the NT$706.56 billion record bar [3] by 5.6% [22], and revenue has already beaten both the SmartEstimate and the top of July guidance [5], so a record is the expected outcome. The call can go three ways. A margin outlook near the 50% estimate with capex unchanged leaves the picture as it is. A materially lower outlook puts the 2nm costs into the numbers. A capex range above $64 billion [9] would be the larger sector signal. We would be wrong if the outlook comes in clearly below 50% and the shares rise anyway.
The sector link Cryptopolitan draws is capex: it says TSMC's capex plans and margin guidance continue to shape spending across the sector [28]. The account did not include order data from TSMC's customers or equipment makers to test that, so it is an assertion. What the figures do show is a budget whose $62 billion midpoint is 52.9% above the $40.54 billion spent in 2025 [23][10] and 14.8% above the midpoint of the range it replaced [24], while TSMC guides full-year revenue growth to slightly more than 40% in dollars [11]. Spending is growing faster than sales.
Beyond Arizona, the open question is Texas. Reuters reported in September that TSMC was looking at an investment there, and Elon Musk has said the Terafab AI chip complex would be built and run by his companies, with part of the site possibly subleased to TSMC [14]. Morningstar analyst Felix Lee said "Texas is a good location for a 2030s or 2040s expansion grand plan" [25] and suggested the proposal "may be a dangling carrot to preempt potential US trade and other policies" [26]. On Lee's timeline, Texas spending is a question for the 2030s.
What to watch
- The fourth-quarter margin outlook on the 0600 GMT call, against the roughly 50% net margin the third-quarter estimates imply; a clearly lower outlook with rising shares would break our read.
- Whether the 2026 capex range of $60 billion to $64 billion moves, and in which direction, since a rise above $64 billion would raise depreciation.
- Whether management puts a figure or a date on Texas, given Felix Lee's 2030s to 2040s timeline.
