TSMC's sixth straight record profit comes with a prudent plan for 2027

TSMC's third-quarter net profit rose 68.7% to a record NT$763.1 billion, its sixth straight record. Its chief executive still said the company will be prudent in planning 2027, citing rising component prices.

What happened

  • Quarterly revenue rose 50.9% to NT$1.5 trillion.
  • Wei said TSMC is exploring sites outside Arizona for expansion and has sent an evaluation team to Texas, without giving details.
  • TSMC shares were down 2.2% ahead of the report and stayed in the red after it.

Why it matters

  • What doesn't add up contradiction Wei's push to capture every order sits beside a prudent 2027 plan, and the reported figures do not settle which one a buyer should budget on.
  • Who has to decide decision Budget lines that depend on 2nm-class parts now need their own price contingency and delivery buffer, separate from lines that do not.
  • What it limits constraint Added US capacity from TSMC is still undated, so a 2027 hardware plan cannot count on it yet.

Anyone building a 2027 AI hardware budget heard two messages on TSMC's earnings call. Chief executive C.C. Wei said demand for advanced chips remains "extremely robust", including the steep ramp-up of 2nm technology [8]. He also said the company would be "prudent" in its business planning for 2027, owing to rising component prices and economic uncertainties [11].

The quarter itself leaves little to argue with. Profit of NT$763.1 billion beat the analyst estimate by about 3.2% [2][17]. It came in roughly 8.0% above the previous record of NT$706.6 billion set in April to June [3][16]. Working back from the 68.7% rise, the year-earlier quarter was about NT$452 billion [1][18].

Wei said TSMC would "do everything we can, whenever we can, as fast as we can" to meet customer demand [9]. He added: "We have no intention to leave food on the table for others, and we want to capture every piece of business possible." [10] The coverage does not report wafer prices, capacity figures or customer lead times, so a shortage is an inference. The one cost Wei did name was rising component prices, and he named it as a reason for caution [11].

Demand has its own dependency. Zavier Wong, a market analyst at eToro, said: "If the biggest buyers start to pace their spending, whether because of funding costs or AI labs slowing the development of new models, chipmakers would feel it quickly." [15] Investors are already watching for that. TSMC shares have risen nearly 60% in 2026 [7], and Samsung's shares fell last week even after it forecast a leap of more than 780% in third-quarter operating profit, because the forecast missed expectations [14].

We think the cautious line should carry more weight in a budget than the record. Sort each hardware line by two questions. Does it depend on 2nm-class parts arriving in 2027? Is its price fixed by contract, or does it follow the supplier's costs? A line that needs 2nm parts and floats with costs gets a price contingency and a delivery buffer. A line that needs 2nm parts at a fixed price carries delivery risk only, so the contract question is what happens on a late shipment. Lines with neither exposure need the least padding. The tradeoff is that a contingency ties up money the team could spend now. How big to make it is a judgement the budget owner has to be ready to defend.

What to watch

  • Any dated capacity or site decision from TSMC on expansion outside Arizona, including the Texas evaluation.
  • Any figure TSMC attaches to its 2027 plan, which so far rests on the word "prudent" and a cost reason.
  • Signs that the biggest AI buyers are pacing their spending, the case eToro's Zavier Wong said chipmakers would feel quickly.
