What happened

  • Truflation's data show gasoline up 4.8% from August and 32.1% from a year earlier, the main source of headline pressure.
  • Food fell 0.1% in September with groceries down 0.5%, and Truflation's notes put the monthly decline in housing at 0.2%.
  • Further up the supply chain, August producer inflation ran 5.4% annually and import prices rose 7% on the year.
  • Truflation cited payroll growth slowing to 29,000, unemployment at 4.2% and pay growth of 4% as reasons labor costs may press less on services prices.

Why it matters

  • contradiction Core is lower than consensus on the year (2.4% against 2.5%) but higher on the month (0.23% against 0.2%), so a core downside case cannot rest on soft September price momentum.
  • constraint The report calls energy the most volatile part of its own forecast, and fuel is the largest source of headline pressure, so the headline call depends on one price series.
  • exposure Sellers replacing pre-tariff inventory carry the pass-through risk Truflation flags into year-end, with the September ISM prices index at 77.9.

We think the downside call is small, or rather, it is a smaller rise. Truflation's own forecast is an increase, 0.2 points from its August reading of 3.4% [24][1], so the surprise it describes is a gap to the consensus. The call fails if the BLS reports headline at 3.7% or higher, or core at 2.5% or higher [3][4], and each threshold is a single tenth of a point away [21][22]. The article does not include Truflation's record against past BLS prints, so the size of its typical miss is unknown.

Truflation's own explanation for the distance between headline and core is energy. Its head of data, Oliver Rust, gave the reason in the September coverage of the August forecast: "The principal reason headline inflation is running above core is the renewed pressure from energy," he said [14]. Since the Sept. 10 report the annual gasoline rate has widened 4.5 points, from 27.6% to 32.1% [25].

Goods are the slower variable. Truflation's core goods measure is at 1.94%, which is 3.46 points under the August producer rate and 5.06 points under the import rate [27]. The baskets differ, so the comparison is loose. Truflation's earlier analysis found the strongest link between effective tariff rates and core goods inflation when tariff changes came about four months before prices [17], so the tariff changes that matter for September prices date from around May [28]. Rust said in that coverage that as businesses replace inventory bought before tariff increases, more of the higher costs could reach retail prices [19].

For the fourth quarter Truflation projects headline around 3.3% to 3.4% and expects services inflation to stay persistent without accelerating sharply [18]. That range is 0.2 to 0.3 points under its September call [26]. We would treat it as the less certain half of the forecast, since it assumes goods prices rise gradually and services do not pick up. Truflation itself cited a September ISM services prices reading of 74.0 as evidence that input costs remain elevated [20].

What to watch

  • Wednesday's BLS release: headline at 3.7% or above, or core at 2.5% or above, would void the downside case; 3.6% and 2.4% or lower would confirm it.
  • Truflation's next report: whether the 32.1% annual gasoline rate keeps widening after a 4.5-point jump in a month.
  • Truflation's core goods measure: whether it moves up from 1.94% as the four-month tariff lag works through.
