New tokens in the top 100 post a median 27.5% return while older-cycle tokens all show losses
Cryptopolitan reports that tokens from the 2024-2026 launch era in the top 100 returned a median of 27.5% while older tokens posted negative returns. The sample describes survivors of one vintage and says little about altcoins as a group.

Key figures: around 70.8% of newer tokens are in profit, against 30% of assets listed before 2017 with positive returns, per CryptoRank data cited by Cryptopolitan. New tokens from the 2024-2026 era in the top 100 posted a median return of 27.5%.

What happened
- CryptoRank data put about 70.8% of newer tokens in profit, against only 30% of assets listed before 2017.
- The altcoin season index is a neutral 55, and Cryptopolitan says newer tokens have lifted sentiment without triggering an all-out altcoin market.
- Q3 outperformers included PUMP, HYPE, UNI, AAVE, JUP and CAKE, which Cryptopolitan describes as tokens of leading platforms, DeFi protocols and DEXs.
- Tokens launched on BNB Chain reached $6.4B for the 2026 cohort, around 51% of that cohort's total market capitalization.
Why it matters
- constraint The 27.5% cannot serve as a base rate for a new launch, because failed launches fall outside a top-100 sample.
- decision A buyer after the newer-token return has to pick launches one at a time, since the older group posted negative returns and the source ties outperformance to burns and fee distribution.
- contradiction Two cohort figures in the same article differ by about $4.3B, so the totals behind the BNB Chain share are soft.
- exposure The largest slice of the 2026 cohort depends on Binance-linked liquidity and Binance Alpha incentives, so a change there lands on most of its value.
Cryptopolitan does not give the window the 27.5% covers, the count of 2024-2026 launches in the top 100, or launch dates for the Q3 outperformers it names [9][18]. It also says every other token from earlier cycles posted negative returns [9], yet 30% of assets listed before 2017 are in profit [10], so "every" has to mean the typical return of each older cohort. The profit shares are firmer: the newer group's hit rate is 2.36 times the oldest group's [7], which leaves 29.2% of the newer group underwater [6].
We think returns have concentrated in one vintage, and that the evidence for concentration is stronger than the evidence for a rally. The case against has two parts. The first is selection. Cryptopolitan frames the figure around the top 100 assets, while Pump.fun's lifetime count alone is over 23.7M tokens, most of which lost their value and all of their activity [2]. If every one of the top 100 were a Pump.fun token, that would still be one in 237,000 [8]. A median taken after that filter leans positive, so the number that would break our view is the median across every 2024-2026 launch, failures included.
The second part is design. Specific newer tokens gained more than 200% over the past quarter [16], and Cryptopolitan says newer tokens often come with incentives, token burns and fee distribution [17]. Its list of Q3 outperformers includes UNI and AAVE [18]. If those two distribute fees or burn supply and pre-date the 2024-2026 cohort, launch year is a proxy for those features, and an older token with the same features should show up in the positive column.
The cohort totals have their own gap. If $6.4B is about 51% of the 2026 cohort's market cap [12], the cohort is worth roughly $12.5B [13]. Cryptopolitan separately counts 732 project-linked tokens in 2026 at an average market cap of $23M [11], which multiplies out to $16.8B [14], some $4.3B or 34% more [15]. A different token set could explain it (project-linked tokens against everything that launched). The article's own caveat is that token value does not always reflect activity or available liquidity [3].
On Cryptopolitan's account, the behaviour behind the numbers is turnover. Traders are no longer loyal to specific tokens or expecting returns from underperforming chains [19], and liquidity rarely shifts between BTC and altcoins [5]. We would expect the older cohort to stay negative while that holds.
What to watch
- A return series for every 2024-2026 launch, failures included: a median still above zero would answer the selection objection.
- Launch dates and fee-distribution status for UNI, AAVE and the other Q3 outperformers: older fee-paying tokens matching the new ones would make vintage a proxy.
- A sustained move in the altcoin season index away from its neutral 55, which would be the first sign of a broad rally.

The altcoin season index is neutral at 55 points, and newer tokens have boosted altcoin sentiment without triggering an all-out altcoin market.
- [2]
The lifetime count of Pump.fun tokens is now over 23.7M new assets, though most of them have lost their value and all of their activity.
- [3]
The value of tokens does not always reflect activity or available liquidity, and some assets in the BNB Chain ecosystem have posted deep losses.
- [4]
BNB Chain's connection to liquidity on Binance gives some tokens a chance of a Binance DEX listing or a limited centralized market listing, and the incentives of Binance Alpha boosted selected assets.
- [5]
Liquidity rarely shifts between BTC and altcoins, as traders aim to tap all growth opportunities.
- [6]
About 29.2% of the newer-token group is not in profit.
- [7]
The share of newer tokens in profit is about 2.36 times the share of pre-2017 assets in profit.
- [8]
Even if all 100 top-100 assets were Pump.fun tokens, they would be one in 237,000 of Pump.fun's lifetime count.
- [9]
Shifts in the top 100 assets placed new tokens from the 2024-2026 era at the top; those assets achieved a median return of 27.5%, while every other token from earlier market cycles posted negative returns.
- [10]
Based on CryptoRank data, around 70.8% of newer tokens are in profit, while only 30% of assets listed before 2017 have positive returns.

In 2026, CryptoRank counted 732 project-linked tokens, with an average market capitalization of $23M.
- [12]
Tokens launched on BNB Chain reached a total value of $6.4B for the 2026 cohort, or around 51% of the total market capitalization.
- [13]
If $6.4B is about 51% of the 2026 cohort's market cap, the cohort is worth roughly $12.5B.
- [14]
732 tokens at an average market cap of $23M multiply out to about $16.8B.
- [15]
The 732-token total is about $4.3B, or 34%, larger than the total implied by the BNB Chain share.
- [16]
In the short term, specific newer tokens outperform BTC, with over 200% gains for the past quarter.
- [17]
Newer tokens often come with incentives, token burns, and fee distribution instead of being purely speculative assets.
- [18]
The tokens of leading platforms, DeFi protocols and DEXs are among the outperforming assets in Q3, including PUMP, HYPE, UNI, AAVE, JUP, CAKE and others.
- [19]
Traders are no longer loyal to specific tokens or expecting returns from underperforming chains.
