Ethereum drops to $2,362 after its biggest liquidation event in six months

Long positions were over 92% of Ethereum liquidations on October 15, Cryptopolitan reported, in the biggest liquidation event in six months. The same report's positioning data suggests much of that leverage has already been cleared.

Most ETH liquidations came within a single hour ETH liquidations reported by Cryptopolitan: the peak hour on Binance against the 24-hour total, which the report's headline and body give differently.

Key figures: over $157M in positions erased on Binance in the peak hour of ETH liquidations; $242M in ETH liquidations over the past 24 hours per the report's headline; $292M over the past 24 hours per the report's body.

What happened

  • The peak hour wiped out more than $157M in positions on Binance, and Cryptopolitan says most of the day's liquidations fell inside that single hour.
  • Open interest in ETH derivatives fell from close to $20B to $15B, a drop the report ties to the liquidations.
  • It was the third peak of long liquidations in two weeks, after short liquidations dominated September.
  • Analyst @darkfrost, as cited by Cryptopolitan, links the sell-off to a higher September US consumer price index driven by gasoline and energy costs.

Why it matters

  • contradiction Cryptopolitan's headline and text give different 24-hour totals, but one Binance hour is more than half of either, so the burst sits in a single exchange-hour on any reading.
  • exposure A large Hyperliquid long sits close to liquidation, down $11M unrealized and paying $670K in funding fees. A further leg down would test it directly.
  • capability Shorts are building toward $2,600. If ETH rebounds quickly, forced buyers would be on the other side and the next squeeze would be a short-side event.

Open interest is a better test of the fragility claim than the headline count. Cryptopolitan puts the fall at $5B [14], about 25% [15], and credits the liquidations for it [1]. Against 24-hour liquidations of $242M to $292M [20][21], the drop is 17 to 21 times larger [16]. If both figures cover the same stretch, liquidations explain 5% to 6% of it [17] and most of the drop left by another route. The report does not name its data source or say how long the $5B took to go, and it notes that ETH liquidity diminished through October [1], so the windows may not match.

We think the fragility claim holds for price and is weaker for leverage, or rather for the leverage that is still on. ETH gained 74.6% in Q3 [5] and was trying to regain the area near $2,800 when it fell to $2,362.43 [4]. That is 15.6% below the level it was chasing [19]. It is down more than 8% on the week, worse than BTC [7]. On the leverage side, the fear and greed index is at 29, with sentiment at its lowest since July [6], and the report says the move wiped out most existing long positions [22].

For the counter-thesis, over 61% of ETH traders are still long [8]. And the repeated long flushes imply longs rebuilt between them: Cryptopolitan says positioning had already peaked days earlier, with liquidity gathering on Bitfinex [11].

Some money is going the other way. Cryptopolitan says smart-money whales bought spot ETH during the dip and withdrew it from Binance [12].

We take the 92% [3] as a record of leverage that has already gone. We would change that view if open interest climbs back toward $20B while ETH stays under $2,800 [1][4], because longs would then be rebuilding under the same level that just rejected the price. Cryptopolitan itself allows for a further dip, possibly below $2,000 [26].

What to watch

  • Whether ETH trades up through $2,600, where the report says new shorts are building.
  • Open interest against the $15B level: a climb back toward $20B with ETH still under $2,800 would mean longs are rebuilding.
  • Whether ETH holds the $2,300 range, where liquidations continued, or slides toward the $2,000 level the report allows for.
