What happened
- Holders of individual tokenized stocks grew about 26.6x over the same period. The ETF wallet count is rising at roughly twice that pace.
- Holder growth was gradual through July, then spiked in late August as Binance bStocks changed the trajectory. Most of the year's gain came in the last two months.
- Ondo Finance holds 47.4% of sector market cap, or $325.7 million, but only 20.3% of holders.
- Binance's QQQb leads on both counts, with a $67.6 million market cap and 314,500 holders, 35% of all tokenized ETF holders.
Why it matters
- constraint Wallet counts cannot size this market: holders rose 51-fold while the average balance fell 94%. User growth says little about dollars.
- contradiction The ETF lead over single stocks narrows to a rounding difference once Binance is removed. The headline comparison depends on how one issuer's wallets are treated.
- decision An issuer has to pick a metric. Binance's retail channel yields about $357 a holder and Ondo's larger tickets about five times that. The ranking flips depending on wallets or dollars.
- exposure A buyer of index exposure now chooses among near-identical tokens on different chains, and each issuer's pool is a fraction of the sector total.
On January 1, $219.2 million sat in about 17,500 wallets [1][2], roughly $12,500 each [11]. Now $686.5 million is spread over 897,700 wallets [1][2], about $765 each [12], a fall of 94% [13]. The sector added 880,200 wallets [14] and $467.3 million of market value [15]. That works out to about $531 per new wallet [16], a net average across deposits, redemptions and price moves.
On wallets, ETF tokens are ahead of single stocks, though by less than the article says. ETF holders grew 51.3 times against 26.6 times for single-stock tokens [3][19]. Cryptopolitan wrote that ETF wrappers are adding holders at more than twice that rate [4], but the ratio of the two multiples is about 1.9 [19]. The article does not include market cap growth for single stocks, so the 213% has no dollar comparison [1].
We think most of the wallet lead is one product. Binance bStocks holds 448,400 of the wallets, about half the sector [6]. Remove them and 449,300 remain, which is 25.7 times January's base and a shade under the single-stock 26.6x [24][3]. That treats Binance's January base as zero, a figure Token Terminal's data as reported do not state. The threshold is low: if Binance held more than about 610 ETF wallets on January 1, the ex-Binance multiple tops 26.6x and the ETF lead survives [25]. The counter-case is that the 448,400 are real holders and one exchange's retail channel is still growth.
Balances differ sharply by issuer. Binance's $160.1 million over 448,400 holders is about $357 a holder [6][17], and QQQb's holders average about $215 [18]. Ondo's 20.3% of holders is roughly 182,200 wallets holding $325.7 million, about $1,790 each [20][22], five times Binance's average [23]. Robinhood shows the retail shape too, with 13.1% of holders and 5.4% of value [7]. Cryptopolitan suggested Ondo's profile could indicate institutional positions [21].
Demand for index exposure is also split. SPYx follows QQQb at $62.2 million and Ondo's IVVon is close behind at $61.5 million [9]. Top-10 products tracking the S&P 500 or Nasdaq-100 hold about $330 million between them, nearly half the sector, and several follow the same index through different issuers on different chains [10].
What to watch
- Token Terminal's single-stock market cap growth for 2026, which would test the 213% ETF figure on dollars instead of wallets.
- Binance's ETF holder count in January, which decides whether the ex-Binance multiple sits above or below the 26.6x single-stock figure.
- Whether the $765 average balance rises as bStocks holders add to positions, or the wallet count keeps outrunning capital.
