STRK has more than quadrupled in 30 days as Starknet floats a Layer 1 shift that still needs governance approval
Starknet's STRK token gained about 322% in 30 days to October 12 on a proposal to leave Ethereum, while its DeFi total value locked rose 5% to 7%. The market cap now sits at several times that locked value.
The Investor · Invest desk

STRK gained about 322% in 30 days (reported 322% to 323%). Market cap is about $860 million (snapshots $860 million to $888 million). Starknet DeFi TVL is about $168 million, up roughly 5% to 7%. STRK remains more than 97% below its February 2024 high.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| STRK price gain, 30 days | 322% | reported as 322% to 323% | 1 |
| STRK market capitalization | 860 $ million | snapshots range $860M to $888M | 6 |
| Starknet DeFi value locked | 168 $ million | up roughly 5% to 7% | 8 |
| Below all-time high | 97% | more than 97%; high set February 2024 | 9 |
What happened
- The proposal, unveiled at Token2049, would turn Starknet from an Ethereum-settled Layer 2 into an independent Layer 1 and aims to make it the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027.
- STRK jumped around 40% in a single day on October 9, with intraday prices pushing above $0.12.
- Twenty-four-hour trading volumes frequently topped several hundred million dollars during the run, and decentralized exchange volumes and perpetual futures trading also climbed.
- The shift is still only a proposal needing technical work, governance approval and community feedback, with no confirmed launch timeline, so Starknet continues to settle on Ethereum.
- The rally has not come close to erasing the losses: STRK is still down more than 97% from the all-time high it hit in February 2024.
Why it matters
- constraint Leaving Ethereum settlement would give up the security guarantees that made Layer 2s attractive, according to Crypto Briefing, and a standalone chain would have to persuade validators, developers and capital to back it.
- contradiction The quantum-resistance goal carries a 2027 date while the approval it depends on has none, so each month without a vote shortens the window the pitch itself sets.
- precedent Crypto Briefing says a prominent rollup openly weighing independence challenges the model of Layer 2s as extensions of Ethereum, so the vote matters to other rollups as well as to STRK holders.
Start with the multiples. A 322% gain leaves STRK at 4.22 times its price 30 days earlier [11]. Over a window Crypto Briefing describes as slightly shorter, DeFi total value locked (TVL) rose roughly 5% to 7% [8], or 1.05 to 1.07 times its earlier level [12]. A matching window could narrow that gap a little, and the report did not say when the TVL measurement began.
The levels are starker. TVL is about $168 million [8] against a market cap reported between $860 million and $888 million [6], so the token is valued at 5.1 to 5.3 times the deposits in its apps [13]. A market cap is a price multiplied by supply and TVL is money sitting in contracts, so neither is the value of the network. Only one of them has been bid up more than four-fold [11].
The counter-thesis is that activity did respond to the news. Fees reached a seven-day high of $13,685 on October 8, up about 190% from the week's low [7]. That low works out to about $4,700 [14]. Those are real fees, and they are small beside a market cap of at least $860 million [6].
We think the 322% is a price for the proposal. Ben-Sasson's argument, as Crypto Briefing summarizes it, is control: a standalone chain could set its own timelines for post-quantum security upgrades [3]. That is a coherent reason for the team to want independence and a plausible reason for a trader to pay up before any vote.
Three outcomes would change the read: governance approves a dated plan and the price turns out to have had a reason, the proposal stalls and the move reverses, or deposits climb without any vote. Only the last would prove us wrong, since it would put usage under the price.
What to watch
- A Starknet governance post or vote that attaches a date to the Layer 1 migration and the 2027 quantum-resistance target.
- Whether DeFi TVL climbs from about $168 million fast enough to pull the market cap below five times locked value.
- Whether fees stay above the $13,685 seven-day high set on October 8 once the Token2049 news is a few weeks old.

Starknet's STRK token gained approximately 322% to 323% over the 30 days leading up to October 11-12, 2026, outpacing Bitcoin and Ether over the same window.
- [2]
The proposal, unveiled at the Token2049 conference, would shift Starknet from an Ethereum-settled system to an independent Layer 1 chain, with the stated goal of becoming the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027.

CEO Eli Ben-Sasson has framed independence as a matter of control: a standalone Layer 1 would let Starknet set its own timelines for security upgrades, especially around post-quantum cryptography.

On October 9, STRK posted a single-day gain of around 40%, with intraday prices pushing above $0.12.

STRK's market capitalization was reported between $860 million and $888 million in recent snapshots.

On October 8, Starknet fees hit a seven-day high of $13,685, up about 190% from the week's low.
- [8]
Starknet's DeFi total value locked rose roughly 5% to 7% over a stretch slightly shorter than the price rally and now sits at approximately $168 million.

Even after the surge, STRK remains more than 97% below its all-time high, set in February 2024.

The Layer 1 shift is still only a proposal that needs technical work, governance approval and community feedback; there is no confirmed launch timeline, and for now Starknet continues to settle on Ethereum.
- [11]
A 322% gain leaves STRK at about 4.22 times its price 30 days earlier.
- [12]
A 5% to 7% rise in TVL is a multiple of 1.05 to 1.07 times its earlier level.
- [13]
STRK's market cap is about 5.1 to 5.3 times Starknet's DeFi TVL.
- [14]
If the October 8 fee high of $13,685 was about 190% above the week's low, that low was about $4,700.
- [15]
If Starknet follows through, it would mean giving up the security guarantees that made Layer 2s attractive in the first place, and persuading validators, developers and capital that a standalone chain is worth the trade.

A prominent rollup openly weighing independence challenges the model of Layer 2 networks as extensions of Ethereum.
