US spot Ether ETFs lost $542.2 million over Oct. 5-9 while ETH stalled $28.63 below its 50-day average

US spot Ethereum ETFs recorded $542.2 million of net outflows over Oct. 5-9, crypto.news reported, with ETH near $2,530. The report has flows for that week only, so a link to ETH stalling below resistance is inference.

ETH slipped back and did not hold above resistance ETH price levels on TradingView's daily chart, per crypto.news, with the nearest overhead liquidation cluster shown by CoinGlass.

ETH was at $2,529.47 on Oct. 12 on the Binance ETH/USDT daily chart. Its 50-day simple moving average stood at $2,558.10, the daily session high was $2,579.88, and CoinGlass showed a large overhead liquidation concentration near $2,585.

What happened

  • On the daily chart, ETH's 50-day average stood at $2,558.10 and its 20-day average at $2,640.41, so the price sat under both.
  • The daily chart recorded a session high of $2,579.88 before ETH slipped back, and the price had not held above the resistance zone.
  • Ether rebounded from a low near $2,410 during a sell-off that followed a sharp retreat from the $2,700 region earlier in the month.
  • Analysts Ted Pillows and Michaël van de Poppe both pointed to $2,560-$2,575 as the key zone ETH needs to win back.
  • CoinGlass data put heavy clusters of liquidations above the price, near $2,585, $2,635-$2,640 and $2,740.

Why it matters

  • constraint A week of net redemptions means the ETF channel was not supplying net buying into the zone where the chart needs it, so the next weekly flow total is the first test of the thesis.
  • cost Waiting for both a daily close above $2,575 and a positive flow print gives up the first $45.53, or 1.80%, of any move from $2,529.47.
  • exposure The nearest liquidation cluster sits only $5.12 above the session high, so a breakout through the zone could come from leveraged positioning with no fund demand behind it.

The distances are short. ETH at $2,529.47 sits $28.63, or 1.13%, under the 50-day average [13] and $110.94, or 4.39%, under the 20-day [14]. The session high cleared the top of the analysts' $2,575 line by $4.88, or 0.19% [15], and the price slipped back anyway. Van de Poppe said in an Oct. 11 post that he wanted to see a strong breakout above $2,575 [8]. A 0.19% poke that reversed falls short of it.

The ETF number is the one institutional datum in the report, and it is easy to over-read. At the Oct. 12 price, $542.2 million is roughly 214,000 ETH [16], though the true count depends on the prices at which the funds traded that week. We think the outflow matters more than any single chart level, because a week of net redemptions means the funds were not net buyers in the run-up to the Oct. 12 test of the 50-day line [1]. That is a view, and there are two other readings. Outflows may have trailed the slide, with holders redeeming after ETH had already fallen from the $2,700 region to about $2,410 [5], in which case the outflow is a symptom of the sell-off. Or leveraged positioning sets the next move: CoinGlass showed large liquidation concentrations overhead [9].

What would prove us wrong is specific. If ETH closes a day above $2,575 and the next weekly flow total is still negative, price will have cleared resistance without fund buying, and the institutional-demand thesis fails. If flows turn positive and ETH still stalls under $2,558.10 [3], the failure runs the other way. Pillows said in an Oct. 12 post that reclaiming $2,560-$2,570 could open the way toward $2,700 [7], a further 6.74% from the current price [18].

The chart is split. The 4-hour RSI is 46.71, under the neutral 50 [11], while ETH holds above its 100-day average at $2,240.06 and its 200-day at $2,137.27 [10]. If the rebound fails, the source puts the first downside references at $2,514 and $2,500, then the lower Bollinger band near $2,468 [12], with the $2,410 low behind them [5].

What to watch

  • The next weekly net flow total for US spot Ethereum ETFs, set against the $542.2 million outflow of Oct. 5-9.
  • A daily close above $2,575 versus another failure under the 50-day average at $2,558.10.
  • Whether ETH clears the CoinGlass liquidation clusters near $2,585 and $2,635-$2,640 while ETF flows stay negative.
