What happened

  • The 20-minute trading halt was the exchange's first in about two and a half months, and the index had been down as much as 8% during the session.
  • Foreign investors sold a net 2.9 trillion won ($2.15 billion) of shares, a figure Cryptopolitan placed in the same sentence as the two chipmakers' losses.
  • The sell-off followed Broadcom CEO Hock Tan comparing AI investors to casino gamblers at a Singapore event on October 12, Cryptopolitan reported.
  • FSC Chairman Lee Eok-won called an emergency market review with the Financial Supervisory Service and the Korea Exchange among the participants.

Why it matters

  • exposure Amid doubts about AI financing, the two chipmakers fell 2.13 and 3.78 points more than the index.
  • constraint Without index weights the concentration claim cannot be sized. The two stocks would need roughly a 72% combined weight to explain the whole drop with everything else flat.
  • contradiction Mirae's Seo places the cause in doubts about AI financing and returns on infrastructure spending, while the regulators' case for an overdone sell-off rests on solid sector earnings.

A 7.57% fall to 5,554.22 [1] implies a prior close of roughly 6,009, or about 455 points gone in one session [9]. SK Hynix's 11.35% and Samsung's 9.70% [3] were 3.78 and 2.13 percentage points worse than the index [10].

Cryptopolitan's report does not include either stock's weight in the index, and weight decides how much each stock's move contributes to the index's move. A crude bound is available anyway. Average the two moves (10.525%, an unweighted shortcut) and ask what combined weight would explain the whole 7.57% if every other stock had been flat: 7.57 divided by 10.525 is about 72% [11]. Any weight below that means other stocks fell too, and the regulators' own meeting points that way, since its participants judged the sell-off excessive given solid earnings at semiconductors, defense and shipbuilding [6].

In our view the figures support "the chips fell hardest" and stop short of saying the chips were the whole index move. The counter-case is that two heavyweights falling about 10.5% on average can account for most of a 7.57% drop at a weight short of 72%. In that case the concentration is real and the rest of the market fell as well.

The causes the two sides name differ. Seo Sang-young, an analyst at Mirae Asset Securities, told Reuters: "The market is reacting sensitively to whether capital raising will be sustainable and whether massive infrastructure investment will lead to real income, rather than revenue growth itself in AI services." [12] According to Cryptopolitan, he said the doubt over the AI trade as a whole had rattled the market more than chip earnings did [13]. If he is right, strong earnings in the regulators' three sectors are not an answer to the sell-off, because the doubt concerns financing and the return on infrastructure spending.

The commission's output on the day was an assessment and a pledge of zero tolerance for manipulation and illegal short selling [7]. A pledge on short sellers addresses one source of selling pressure; the cause Seo describes is a doubt about financing. It was also the FSC's second AI-linked emergency session that week, after one on a hacking wave that breached 16 financial firms [8].

What to watch

  • Samsung Electronics' and SK Hynix's combined Kospi weight, which sets how far the 72% threshold is from the truth.
  • Whether the exchange trips another circuit breaker after the first in about two and a half months, and whether foreign net selling extends beyond the 2.9 trillion won.
  • Whether the FSC's short-selling and manipulation enforcement produces named cases, or whether the AI-financing doubt keeps driving the chip names.
