Seoul halted trading for 20 minutes as chip stocks pulled the Kospi down 7.57% to 5,554
Seoul's Kospi fell 7.57% to 5,554.22 on Thursday, tripping a sidecar and a 20-minute circuit breaker as Samsung Electronics and SK hynix sank. The reports carry prices and flows but no valuations, and say nothing about whether chip shares were overpriced.

Three figures: the Kospi fell more than 9 percent to an intraday low of 5,450.81, per the Korea Herald; the circuit breaker tripped after a drop of more than 8 percent from the previous close; the index opened 5.59 percent lower.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|

What happened
- SK hynix fell 11.06% to 1.26 million won and Samsung Electronics 9.48% to 210,000 won, the two largest names in the chip sell-off.
- Overnight U.S. consumer prices rose 0.6% in September from August, the fastest monthly rise since April, according to both Yonhap and the Korea Herald.
- The tech-heavy Kosdaq closed down 7.65% at 760.82 after its own breaker at 12:23 p.m., the first same-day double trigger since July 29.
- The won touched an intraday low of 1,353 per dollar before closing at 1,343.18, according to the Korea Herald.
Why it matters
- contradiction Korean government bond yields fell on a day one Daishin analyst blamed partly on rising borrowing costs. The rate fear traced to U.S. inflation data and the Fed.
- exposure Domestic investors now hold 2.98 trillion won of net purchases made into a seventh straight down session. A further drop lands on them.
- constraint The Kospi still closed 7.57% lower after both pauses. The sidecar and circuit breaker slow selling but cannot cap a day's loss.
The index lost 454.59 points to end at 5,554.22 [1]. That puts the previous close at 6,008.81 [17], and the intraday low of 5,450.81 [2] sat 9.3% below it [18]. The Korea Herald also put the low at more than 9% down [3]. By the close, buyers had pulled the index back 103.41 points from the bottom [19].
Foreigners sold a net 3.62 trillion won [5], while institutions and individuals together bought a net 2.98 trillion [20]. Domestic money took about 82% of the foreign selling [21]. That net foreign sale was only 13.5% of the 26.87 trillion won traded [22], a volume Yonhap called moderate [12]. A 7.57% fall on that base points to thin bids at the prior price. Net figures hide gross ones, though, and we hold the inference loosely.
Chips led, but the selling was wide. Decliners beat advancers 787 to 112 [13], about seven to one [23], and each of the four stocks the reports name fell by more than the index did [7][8]. Daishin Securities analyst Lee Kyoung-min said the market faced "heavy selling pressure amid concerns over the sustainability of AI-related investments, intensifying competition in memory chip production and rising borrowing costs" [14]. Only the last of those is a Fed variable. Yonhap framed the fear as persistent inflation that could prod the Fed to raise rates [10].
We think the evidence supports a trigger-and-sequence account of Thursday. It was the seventh straight down session, the longest losing streak since September 2024 [11]. The 7.57% landed on a market already falling, and the trigger was one inflation print and a rate path that exists only as a worry. The counter-case is mechanical: domestic buyers absorbed most of the net selling, and the index finished off its low.
A bounce without news would prove the account wrong. If the Kospi regains the 6,008.81 prior close while the rate worry stands, Thursday was a flow event. If foreigners keep selling after the domestic bid tires, the account holds, and Mirae Asset Securities analyst Kim Seok-hwan has already described that setup. He said, "As domestic supply-demand conditions deteriorate, the market has become more sensitive to external risks, while a near-term improvement in the global environment appears unlikely." [25]
What to watch
- Whether foreign investors stay net sellers after Thursday's 3.62 trillion won while domestic buying holds near 2.98 trillion won.
- Whether the Kospi regains its 6,008.81 prior close or closes below the 5,450.81 intraday low.
- Any Fed signal on whether September's 0.6% CPI print changes its rate path.
