KOSPI lost 5.46% in a day, about 12 times the Nasdaq's overnight decline
KOSPI closed down 5.46% at 6,035.35 on Oct. 13, a fifth straight losing session, as foreigners sold a net 4.51 trillion won of stocks. Yonhap cites AI and inflation worries, but the named causes are OpenAI revenue, finished chip buybacks and a Chinese rival, with U.S. CPI still due.

Key figures: foreigners sold a net 4.51 trillion won of stocks. Individuals bought a net 2.23 trillion won and institutions bought a net 1.69 trillion won.
| Figure | Value | Note | Claim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Net stocks sold by foreigners | 4.51 trillion won | 18 | |
| Individuals' net buying | 2.23 trillion won | 20 | |
| Institutions' net buying | 1.69 trillion won | 19 |
What happened
- The Korea Exchange triggered a sell-side sidecar in morning trading after the index fell more than 5% for at least one minute.
- Institutions bought a net 1.69 trillion won and individuals a net 2.23 trillion won, against decliners outnumbering advancers 628 to 246.
- The won was quoted at 1,345.1 per dollar at 3:30 p.m., against 1,335.1 at the previous close.
Why it matters
- contradiction Seoul fell about 12 times as far as the Nasdaq did overnight, so a New York read-through cannot account for the move.
- exposure Domestic institutions and individuals absorbed about 87% of the foreign net sale, so they hold the stock if the chip decline continues.
- decision Buyers of Korean chips must decide before Wednesday's U.S. CPI whether inflation is a driver at all, because that report is the first inflation data the sources mention.
The causes the sources name are narrower than the headline. Han Ji-young, an analyst at Kiwoom Securities, said: "Concerns over OpenAI's revenue and the completion of local chipmakers' share buybacks continued to weigh on tech stocks." [16] Chipmakers also slumped after reports of rapid technical progress at Chinese rival ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) [17]. Only the first of those concerns AI demand. A rival's progress bears on competition, and a completed buyback is a bid that has left the market. The sources do not say how large the buyback programs were.
Inflation has the least support of the three explanations. Yonhap's lead says tech stocks tumbled amid renewed woes over AI and inflation [21], but its one inflation reference is that investors await Wednesday's U.S. consumer price index for clues on the Federal Reserve's October meeting [12].
The selling kept going after the open. KOSPI opened 3.1% lower [2], and from that level it lost a further 2.4% by the close [14]. Foreigners' net sale of 4.51 trillion won [18] equals about 17% of the 26.79 trillion won traded that day [9][24], and the Korea Exchange triggered its sell-side sidecar in the morning [4].
The damage was concentrated. Decliners outnumbered advancers 628 to 246 [10], but Samsung Electronics fell 7.39% and SK hynix 10.09% [6], against 2.67% for defense maker Hanwha Aerospace and 1.56% for Hyundai Motor [7]. HMM rose 1.15% and Korea Electric Power 2.1% [8].
We think the day was mostly a chip unwind with macro labels attached. That is a view from one session on one exchange, and it can fail three ways: a hot CPI print would make inflation a real cause, a cool print with chips still falling would point to CXMT and the end of the buybacks, and a chip rebound on no news would make the day a matter of positioning. The sources cover Seoul only, so the "Asian tech equities" framing goes beyond them. Similar falls in other Asian chip markets would show a wider repricing and prove the narrower view wrong.
What to watch
- The U.S. CPI report due Wednesday and the Fed's October meeting: a hot print would make inflation testable as a cause.
- Whether Samsung Electronics and SK hynix stabilize or the index logs a sixth losing session, and whether domestic buyers keep absorbing foreign sales.
- Any disclosure of the size of the completed chipmaker buybacks, or similar falls in other Asian chip markets.
