Samsung and SK hynix slid more than 2% premarket on CXMT news with the KOSPI already down nearly 9%
Samsung Electronics and SK hynix fell 2.20% and 2.68% in Seoul premarket trading as CXMT's server memory plans weighed on memory stocks. Other pressures sat in the same tape, so one morning cannot size the China supply risk.

Four figures: the KOSPI's 200-day moving average of 6,376 points, which the index is close to; Micron's 3.9% fall in US trading the previous day; Micron's 261% gain for the year through Friday's close; and CXMT's 466% share rise at its July trading debut.

| CXMT shares, July debut | 466% rise | 9 |
What happened
- In US trading the previous day Micron fell 3.9% and SanDisk 6.0%, according to en.sedaily.com, before Seoul's premarket opened.
- The South China Morning Post, citing a company statement, reported that CXMT President Cao Kanyu told a Shanghai industry event over the weekend the company intends to launch a new server memory product before the end of 2026.
- A warning from Broadcom's chief executive about financing for artificial intelligence investment also pressured sentiment, en.sedaily.com reported.
- CXMT's July trading debut lifted its shares 466% and its market value to just under $500 billion, Barron's reported, making it China's largest company by valuation.
Why it matters
- contradiction The sources describe the announcement differently: en.sedaily.com calls it DDR5 server chips, while the South China Morning Post account relayed by qz.com describes a 4F square cell layout that Samsung and SK hynix are also exploring.
- exposure After a 261% gain for Micron through Friday, memory shares carry a price that assumes AI demand keeps supply tight, so a credible new supplier draws a fast reaction.
- decision Holders of the Korean pair face a nearer test than CXMT's product: the KOSPI sits close to its 200-day average of 6,376 points, and US CPI data plus ASML and TSMC earnings arrive this week.
Samsung's 2.20% premarket fall [3] is within about 0.05 points of the KOSPI's recent run rate [15]. The index has dropped nearly 9% over four sessions [5], or just under 2.25% a session [13], and SK hynix's 2.68% [4] is at least 0.43 points worse than that [14]. A move that size, on a morning when the whole market is falling at that pace, cannot be pinned on one cause. The en.sedaily.com report lists a US chip selloff [16] and a Broadcom warning [18] beside the CXMT news.
The two accounts also size the damage differently. En.sedaily.com has Micron down 3.9% [16]; qz.com has it down about 3% at $998.15 [17], perhaps an intraday figure set against a close. Qz.com has Samsung finishing down 4.4% [8] without saying which market that close was in, and if it was Seoul's Monday session, the premarket 2.20% is a second leg down.
We think the narrow claim holds and the broad one is not yet earned. The narrow claim is that CXMT now moves how investors price Korean memory: Micron, SanDisk and both Korean names fell on the same weekend news [17] [8]. The broad claim is that the risk is priced in. One session's fall does not show that. Pricing the risk would take a ship date, a volume and a cost per bit, and the record offers a launch some time before the end of 2026 [2] and a cell layout that fits more cells on the same chip [19], with no chip count, yield or price.
The counter-thesis is the stronger one for sellers. A company valued at just under $500 billion after a 466% debut [9] is not a minor supplier, and anyone selling the incumbents ahead of it may simply be early.
There are other ways this goes. Han Ji-young of Kiwoom Securities said the market will likely attempt an intraday rebound, supported by technical factors and bargain hunting [7]; if the two stocks recover with the index, the fall came from the broader market and not from CXMT. Jim Cramer argued in August, according to qz.com, that memory makers had changed behavior by locking in revenue through extended customer contracts instead of expanding production to chase volume [12]. If that holds, CXMT's chips reach Korean revenue only as contracts roll, and the earnings damage trails the share price. Cramer also flagged a surge in new capacity, Samsung's included, as a risk that could end the rally [12]. Neither source reports a lost contract or a changed capacity plan at either Korean company.
We would be wrong if Samsung and SK hynix rise with the index in the next session, and right if they fall again on a day the KOSPI rises.
What to watch
- Any CXMT disclosure of volume, yield or pricing for the server product it has promised for this year.
- A statement from Samsung or SK hynix on capacity plans or on their own 4F square timetable.
- Whether the two stocks fall again in a session when the KOSPI rises.
