Gurman's October window puts the OLED iPad mini outside next month's iPhone event

The people who feel a "redesigned casing" first are the ones whose minis live inside something else: a vehicle cradle, or a wall enclosure at a check-in desk. The summary of Gurman's newsletter lists that redesigned casing for better water resistance alongside a new vibration-based speaker system ^[11], and gives no dimensions. If audio comes from a panel vibrating rather than from drilled grilles, every third-party case in the channel has cutouts aimed at holes that may not be there. All of this rests on one newsletter item relayed by one publisher, which ran the same text under two headlines ^[1].

A mini refresh looks like a spec bump teams can absorb in the normal course, but the deployed units complicate that assumption: the last revision shipped in October 2024 ^[2], so most fleets are two years into a shell they standardised on, and accessories are the line item that gets re-bought when the shell moves.

The money has already moved once. List went from $499 to $599 earlier this year ^[3], a 20 percent increase ^[6], which is $10,000 more across 100 units ^[7] before the new model has a price at all. 9to5Mac says a further increase remains possible ^[5]. The $569 Amazon price ^[4] is $30 under list, about five percent off ^[8], and that is what outgoing stock is worth today.

The chip guess spans a full generation: A19 Pro or A20 Pro ^[11]. For anyone shipping on-device model features, that gap matters more than the OLED does, because the 2024 mini's Apple Intelligence support arrived with the A17 Pro ^[2], and the ceiling for what runs locally tracks the silicon tier rather than the display.

This product has shipped in October before ^[2]; what changed is the sequencing. The iPhone Ultra and iPhone 18 Pro go on stage next month ^[12], and 9to5Mac expects the mini to follow separately, plausibly on a press release ^[10]. A press release comes with no demo slot and no briefing runway. The product page is the first hard data anyone outside Apple gets, and it arrives the day orders open.

Two factors sort the decision: the physical envelope, meaning mounts and cases, and the silicon tier, meaning on-device model work. If neither does, buy the discounted current model now and stop thinking about it; the tradeoff is that you carry a two-year-old chip through the next cycle. If only the envelope matters, buy the tablets whenever you like but freeze accessory purchase orders until measurements publish. If only the silicon matters, wait for the chip name and treat layout work as provisional until it lands. If both matter, nothing goes out before the page is live, and whoever signs it can say what happens to the existing mounts if the shell changed.

That last sentence is the useful forcing function. It costs nothing to write down now, and it is the question you will be asked in November by the person holding 60 cradles that no longer clamp.
