Microsoft's Windows chief ties memory tuning for 8GB PCs to rising memory costs
Microsoft ended security updates for Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro on October 13, 2026, with Enterprise and Education covered to October 12, 2027. For fleet owners the cutoff is a patching deadline, and the memory-price pressure Microsoft's executive describes is a separate hardware-budget question.

What happened
- The mandatory October update, KB5127648, puts 24H2 on build 26100.9711, the last build Home and Pro editions will receive, according to Windows Latest's testing.
- Davuluri also said Microsoft is still working on compressing memory and using it more efficiently, Windows Latest reports from the podcast.
- A July 31, 2026 Windows Insider post names "Memory optimization for 8GB and above" as one of four new focus areas for the rest of the year.
- SK Hynix told investors its HBM, DRAM and NAND capacity was sold out through 2026, the DEV Community post reports.
Why it matters
- Who has to decide decision Enterprise and Education fleets on 24H2 keep 364 days of patching that Home and Pro fleets have already lost. The move to 26H2 can be scheduled on the first group and is overdue on the second.
- What it costs cost A refresh quote priced a quarter ago can be stale on memory: TrendForce reported conventional DRAM contract prices rising another 10 to 15% quarter over quarter heading into Q4 2026.
- What it limits constraint Microsoft's stated goal is a smaller memory footprint, and the passages quoted put no size on it, so planners cannot yet count the saving in a hardware budget.
- What doesn't add up contradiction The cost link rests on one executive's spoken remark, relayed by Windows Latest.
The DEV Community post relays its figures from Windows Latest, TrendForce, Counterpoint Research and SK Hynix. Each number below is secondhand.
Meeting the deadline takes one restart. The October update is mandatory and moves every supported branch to a new build [2]. 26H2 shipped in September 2026 as a lightweight enablement package, and devices with automatic updates should pick it up with one restart [4].
The same update removes the old PC-to-PC Migration tool in favor of Windows Backup over OneDrive [14]. Refresh runbooks that call the old tool need a new step.
The cost link comes from Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft's President of Windows and Devices. He said "memory is top of mind for us right now in the industry, especially as we look at the rising cost of memory" on Microsoft's Inside Windows podcast, according to Windows Latest [5]. The July 31 post states the goal as "reducing Windows memory footprint to deliver a fast and responsive Windows experience." It credits earlier work on a more efficient memory allocator and tuning of WinUI 3 [8].
The baseline explains why 8GB is the target. By Microsoft's past statements, as Windows Latest reports them, an 8GB Windows 11 PC idles at close to 6GB used before a user opens an app, and a 16GB machine idles above 10GB [17]. On the 8GB machine that is roughly 75% of memory, leaving about 2GB [18]. Those are Microsoft's figures. A managed image with endpoint agents and a VPN client will idle at a different level, so a footprint cut should be measured against your own baseline.
On supply, the post says DRAM and PC memory come off the same production lines, from the same handful of companies, so PC-grade memory competes with AI data centers for output [13]. Counterpoint Research projected that the price of DDR5 server memory in high capacities could reach about twice its early-2025 level by the end of 2026 [11]. That projection covers server memory, so it points to pressure on shared capacity and says little directly about laptop RAM prices.
We'd expect to price the next refresh at current memory costs and treat Microsoft's footprint work as upside until it ships with a measured number.
What to watch
- Microsoft putting a measured footprint figure on the 8GB-and-above work.
- The October 19 expiry of the Windows Production PCA 2011 Secure Boot certificate, which touches older unpatched hardware.
- Whether the Q4 2026 DRAM contract-price rise carries into 2027, given SK Hynix said its capacity was sold out only through 2026.
