None of the three is a tentpole feature, and all three quietly expire assumptions currently baked into UI layouts, accessory tooling and performance budgets.
Start with the cutout. 9to5Mac reports the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max keep the basic sizes and designs of this year's models, but that Face ID components move under the display, shrinking the Dynamic Island to the smallest display cutout in years [2][3]. If that holds, anything with a top-anchored HUD, full-bleed video chrome or a camera viewfinder overlay gets new safe-area numbers on a device whose overall dimensions did not change, which is the awkward case: the physical mock on your desk still fits, and the layout does not.
The rear is a tooling and merchandising problem rather than a code one. According to 9to5Mac, the iPhone 17 Pro's two-tone back proved polarizing, and Apple plans to blend the aluminium and glass colours for a unified look, with a Dark Cherry or burgundy shade expected to replace Cosmic Orange as the flagship colour [4][5]. Weibo account Fixed Focus Digital, citing supply chain sources, says A20 Pro will be 18 percent faster with 30 percent better power efficiency than A19 Pro [7]; MacRumors reports the same account with "up to" qualifiers, and notes A20 Pro is the first iPhone chip on TSMC's 2nm process rather than the current 3nm [8]. Both write-ups trace to one leaker, so treat this as single-sourced [9]. Taken at face value, an operation that costs 100ms on A19 Pro would cost roughly 85ms on A20 Pro [10], which is real but not the kind of jump that rescues a frame budget. 9to5Mac also credits iOS 27 with its own speed gains, so this year's regression testing has two moving variables [11].
Battery-side, the Pro Max is expected to carry a roughly 10 percent larger cell than its predecessor, on top of efficiency from the 2nm process and a switch to Apple's own C2 modem, following C1 in the iPhone 16e and C1X in the iPhone Air [12][13][14]. For camera apps, a variable aperture main camera and a wider-aperture telephoto would add a control axis that manual UI does not currently have [15][16].
