AT&T points iPhone 18 Pro Max owners with failing calls to an Apple update that lists Face ID fixes
AT&T texted iPhone 18 Pro Max owners to install iOS 27.0.1 immediately, warning that some phones may be unable to complete calls, including to 911. Teams managing those phones can install it for the fixes Apple documented while keeping the cellular fault logged as unresolved.

What happened
- Apple's release notes for iOS 27.0.1 list Face ID and camera fixes for the iPhone 18 Pro models and do not mention cellular connectivity.
- Many affected users say they installed iOS 27.0.1 when it shipped on Monday and still have the same call, text and data failures.
- At least thousands of users have reported the problem across Apple Support Community, Reddit and MacRumors' forums, according to MacRumors.
- The US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone with a Qualcomm modem, while the Pro, the Duo and Pro Max units sold outside the US use Apple's C2.
- Apple has not commented publicly, and the underlying cause of the failures has not been confirmed.

Why it matters
- contradiction AT&T's instruction and Apple's documentation describe different updates, so a team that closes cellular tickets on the carrier's word has no Apple record to cite when the failures continue.
- exposure Anyone whose only work phone is an affected AT&T Pro Max may be unable to reach 911 for as long as the fault lasts, on the carrier's own warning.
- constraint Until the cause is known, teams cannot choose between waiting for another iOS release and planning for replacement hardware, since MacRumors says those outcomes differ sharply.
The text from AT&T arrives on a phone whose status bar may already read SOS. Affected iPhone 18 Pro Max units typically drop into that mode when they lose the network [7]. MacRumors pointed out the irony of a carrier using a text message to warn people their phones might not send or receive texts [14]. The warning itself is two sentences. "Some phones may be unable to complete calls/text/data, including to 911. Update to iOS 27.0.1 immediately," AT&T wrote [2].
The message never actually says the update fixes the cellular fault. It puts a warning next to an instruction and leaves the reader to connect them. 9to5Mac took it to mean AT&T was telling affected users to update to fix the issues [15]. The last line tells users to contact either company: "Please contact AT&T or Apple if you have questions." [16]
Users installed the update the day it shipped, and the failures stayed [5]. Having the fleet on the version AT&T named doesn't justify closing a cellular ticket, and the spread of the reports argues against it. 9to5Mac calls the problem relatively widespread, though it says not every Pro Max is affected [8].
Finding the exposed phones is the easy part. According to 9to5Mac, the iPhone 18 Pro, which runs on Apple's C2 modem, appears unaffected [10]. That narrows an inventory search to US Pro Max units on AT&T, even though MacRumors says it is unclear whether the modem is a contributing factor [11].
Planning is harder. MacRumors says that if the fault is in software, Apple may need to ship another release, such as iOS 27.0.2, and that a hardware fault would be a much bigger problem [13].
I'd install 27.0.1 on these phones anyway, for the Face ID and camera fixes Apple did document [4], and keep the cellular issue logged as open. The tradeoff is a ticket with no close date, plus users who will reasonably ask why following the carrier's instruction changed nothing. For anyone whose Pro Max is their only work phone, that open ticket includes the 911 warning in AT&T's own text [2].
You can sort any update a carrier or vendor tells you to push on two axes. The first is whether the vendor's release note names the symptom. The second is whether people who installed it report the symptom gone. If both are yes, close the ticket. If the notes name it but reports say it persists, the fix is partial or the cause is broader, so keep it open. If the notes don't name it but reports say it is gone, close it provisionally and keep reading the support threads. For AT&T Pro Max owners, iOS 27.0.1 is a no on both axes today [4][5]. In that cell, install it for what it does fix and treat calls on those phones as unreliable until a release says otherwise.
What to watch
- An iOS 27.0.2 release, or any Apple release note that names cellular or AT&T connectivity for the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
- A statement from Apple on the cause, particularly one that points to hardware or to the Qualcomm modem.
- Threads on Apple Support Community and Reddit where AT&T Pro Max owners report calls recovering after an update.
