What happened

  • The Gemini app rollout is gradual and expected to finish by mid-November.
  • Workspace skills had been due by October 12 for Rapid Release and from October 19 for Scheduled Release before the delay.
  • Skills are plain Markdown files in the open SKILL.md format, and several can be stacked.
  • The two surfaces do not sync: a skill built in Workspace has to be recreated in the Gemini app.
  • New Ask a Gem steps can no longer be added in Workspace Studio, though steps already built will run until the cutoff.

Why it matters

  • What it limits constraint A team that waits for Gmail and Docs will not find its leftover Gems there, because at the cutoff they arrive as draft skills in the Gemini app.
  • Who has to decide decision Each Gem now needs a keep-or-drop call, since the guide advises keeping two or three and recreating them as skills by hand.
  • What it costs cost The Docs route needs Standard or Plus, so a 12-person team on Starter would pay $84 a month more at annual prices once the rollout lands.
  • Who's exposed exposure Sharing a skill with the organization also copies the files it references and the flows tied to it, and the creator's email address is visible to anyone holding the link.

The pause rests on one source. A DEV Community guide carries a note dated October 15, 2026, saying Google paused skills in Workspace on October 13 and that the timing in the post was corrected [17]. The guide says Google announced skills on September 30 [1] and calls them "reusable, custom instructions" for Gemini [18]. Google's admin page still labels skills a Gemini Beta feature, the guide adds [10].

Admins feel the pause in the console. Skills are turned on under Apps, Google Workspace, Workspace Studio, Skills, and a change can take up to 24 hours to apply [12]. With the rollout paused, the guide says, skills may not appear yet [11]. A toggle flipped today can wait a day and still show nothing.

The calendar is the firmer constraint. Gems move into Settings on November 17 [7]. Business accounts can no longer create, edit or use them from March 1, 2027 at the earliest [8]. That leaves at least 104 days between the two dates [23].

The guide's case for building in Workspace is data handling. On a personal account, skills only work with Keep Activity switched on, and once that setting is on, human reviewers read some of the chats [19]. Google says business content in Workspace is not human reviewed or used to train models outside the domain without permission [20]. The guide does not say whether business accounts using skills in the Gemini app get the same treatment.

We think the one step that does not depend on the rollout is the first: write down how the document is done. That page is the input to a skill built on either surface.

What to watch

  • Whether Google sets new dates for the Workspace Rapid Release and Scheduled Release tracks.
  • Whether the Gemini app rollout finishes by mid-November and Gems move into Settings on November 17 as stated.
  • Whether Google keeps March 1, 2027 as the Gems cutoff for business accounts while Workspace skills stay paused.
