CoinShares routes stablecoin yield strategies into Safe wallets through Railnet vaults

CoinShares will offer stablecoin yield strategies inside Safe wallets through Railnet vaults, with US persons excluded, an Oct. 14 release says. Its no-custody claim rests on a vault design the release describes only in outline.

What happened

  • Safe users reach the strategies through the Earn widget, and they can request withdrawals at any time.
  • CoinShares Capital Markets (Jersey) Limited is named as the strategy provider, and its terms say yields are not guaranteed and digital assets can lose value.
  • The release lists corporate treasuries, foundations, family offices, blockchain-based organizations and individual crypto investors as intended users.

Why it matters

  • constraint The US persons exclusion and the jurisdiction and eligibility limits mean the reachable share of any stablecoin pool is smaller than its headline total.
  • decision A treasury team weighing the Earn widget has to read the vault terms before it can say whether the position fits its own custody policy.
  • precedent Mognetti's statement calls this the company's first major step into on-chain asset management, so we'd expect further CoinShares products on the same route.

The release divides the product into three jobs and leaves one unassigned: holding the stablecoins between a deposit and a withdrawal [8]. CoinShares said positions remain in users' own Safe accounts throughout and that it neither takes custody nor gains discretionary control [16]. It also said Railnet supplies the vault infrastructure that connects the strategies to the wallet [5]. The release does not say whether deposited stablecoins stay in the Safe account or move into a vault contract, and the meaning of the no-custody claim depends on which. We think the claim holds in the narrow sense CoinShares needs, that CoinShares itself holds nothing. The broader sense is untested, and it is the one treasury teams care about: CoinShares argued that unfamiliar protocols and third-party custody present obstacles for them [14].

The split also shows what each party has chosen not to carry. CoinShares keeps strategy design and risk selection [3], under a Jersey entity named as provider [6]. Safe Labs supplies smart account infrastructure and says it provides no investment services, advice or recommendations [7]. In our view the structure minimises what CoinShares has to hold, build or advise on, and the price is that a depositor has to read the vault's terms to learn who can do what with the funds. The counter-thesis is CoinShares's own: that separating strategy design from custody is the protection, because no single firm both picks the strategy and holds the money [8].

The market figure in the release is older than the release. It cites DefiLlama data showing stablecoin balances above $315 billion as of June 23 [9], in a statement dated Oct. 14 [1]. A 1% share of that pool would be at least $3.15 billion of deposits [15]. The only statement about returns is the warning that yields vary and are not guaranteed [2][6].

Mognetti framed the product as removing a trade-off. "Institutions shouldn't have to choose between maintaining control of their assets and accessing professionally designed yield strategies," he said [11]. Rumalla, Safe's CEO, described Safe's side in narrower terms. "Safe's role is to give enterprises and onchain organisations secure, programmable control over their assets," Rumalla said [10].

What would prove us wrong sits in the vault terms. If they give CoinShares or Railnet authority to move deposited funds, the statement that CoinShares takes no custody needs a narrower reading than the company gives it [16]. If the deposits stay in the Safe account under the user's own authority, the structure is as clean as described and the open question becomes whether treasuries bring money to it.

What to watch

  • Whether CoinShares or Safe publishes a yield range, a fee and a launch date for the strategies in the Earn widget.
  • A second CoinShares strategy offered through Railnet or another wallet, which would show the structure is a template.
  • Any change to the jurisdiction and eligibility list beyond the US persons exclusion.
