Bitcoin futures open interest flat at $21.9B as BTW surges amid broader altcoin rotation
Bitcoin traders held $21.9 billion in futures open interest, almost unchanged, while Bitway's BTW token rose 170% in a month. Bitcoin's leveraged longs are still open, so traders closing those bets did not pay for the small-cap run.
The Investor · Invest desk

What happened
- BTW's run followed the Oct. 2 end of Binance Wallet's Booster Season 5, a deposit-rewards campaign CoinDesk says may have lifted retail engagement.
- Filecoin's FIL rose 12% and LayerZero's ZRO 10% in 24 hours, with both up 50% or more over four weeks.
- Coinglass counted $163 million in liquidations over 24 hours, split 63-27 between longs and shorts.
Why it matters
- exposure Leveraged bitcoin longs that were never closed sit about 2.2% above the $84,000 level Kuptsikevich names, so a break would force selling from positions carried through the stall.
- cost With perpetual funding now at or below the 5-6% three-month basis, bitcoin bulls face little carrying-cost pressure to unwind before price settles the range.
- contradiction CoinDesk frames the small-cap gains as a broader shift, yet ties BTW's attention to a Binance Wallet rewards campaign, a single-token cause that needs no money leaving bitcoin.
If money were rotating out of bitcoin leverage, the futures book would show it first, and that book barely moved. Open interest slipped from $22.0 billion to $21.9 billion [4], a decline of $100 million, or about 0.5% [14]. Funding cooled to roughly 0-5% annualized across venues, down from an elevated 4-10% range [5]. Traders were paying less to keep their longs, and CoinDesk described those longs as still in place after Friday's build [7].
Holding a leveraged long also got cheaper. At the top of the new range, funding matches the bottom of the 5-6% three-month annualized basis [6], so a perpetual long now costs no more than a dated contract implies [19]. Options volume over 24 hours ran 62/38 in favour of calls [12].
BTW's latest day carried a large share of its month. A 170% gain over 30 days puts the token at 2.7 times its month-ago price. Take out the 25% day and it stood at about 2.16 times, so one session supplied roughly a third of the monthly gain [8][18]. According to CoinDesk, attention on the token followed the Oct. 2 end of Binance Wallet's Booster Season 5, a campaign that offered rewards for deposits and may have lifted retail engagement [20]. That cause belongs to one token on one wallet. The wider tape was mixed: FIL rose 12% and ZRO 10% in 24 hours [1], while SKY, VVV and DASH were the three worst performers among the 100 largest tokens [2]. The report does not include trading volume or open interest for BTW or the other gainers, so any transfer of money from bitcoin cannot be measured from it.
Bitcoin itself sits near $85,900 after lows near $85,000 earlier in the day [9], about $1,900 or 2.2% above $84,000 [15]. "A break below $84K would signal a victory for the bears, and a break below the recent local lows at $83K would confirm this with even greater certainty. In this scenario, the leading cryptocurrency could fall to $80K fairly quickly," said Alex Kuptsikevich, chief market analyst at TheFxPro [10]. That fall is about 6.9% from here [16], and it would land on longs that were never closed. Longs already took most of the day's $163 million in market-wide liquidations, 63 to 27 against shorts by Coinglass's count, or roughly $103 million [3][13]. (The published split sums to 90, leaving about $16 million unassigned [13].) On the upside, Binance's liquidation heatmap marks $87,150 as the core level to monitor on a rise [11], $1,250 or about 1.5% away [17]. Or the range holds and small tokens keep moving on catalysts of their own.
I think the evidence supports two separate stories running on the same day: a bitcoin book that cooled without shrinking, and a BTW rally with a Binance campaign behind it. The counter-thesis is that rotation runs through spot. A holder who sells spot bitcoin to buy BTW leaves the $21.9 billion of futures untouched [4], and these data cannot rule that out. The view is wrong if bitcoin open interest starts falling while the small-cap gains hold.
What to watch
- Funding moving back into the 4-10% range with open interest above $22 billion, a sign bitcoin leverage is rebuilding inside the range.
- Whether BTW holds its 170% monthly gain now that Binance Wallet's Booster Season 5 deposit rewards have ended.
- Published open interest or volume for BTW and the other small-cap gainers, the data needed to see whether new leverage is building in them.
